Recent promotion at a smaller boutique, handling long-term engagements. Boss is now leaving the company making me the only person on the engagements. This Q is going to spark some debate. Are the following ranges for average comp for partner with 2-3 YOE accurate? (Not meant to diminish any firms!)

Group 1 - MBB, Tier 2 - Kearney, LEK etc, “deep specialists” - ZS, OW etc: $750k - $1.5M
Group 2: B4, “broad specialists” - Navigant, W. Monroe etc: $400-600K
Group 3: Regional - North Highland, Point B etc: $250-400K

For the junior associates out there, I’m a 2020 call and am convinced that I’m taking a lot of time while working on deals. I’m also not really sure how my efficiency compares to other associates as I’m the only junior in the group. The junior partner I work with primarily always tells me to rack up my hours but I’m also afraid of looking inefficient with the more senior partners. Does anyone ever write down their own time? Or is ashamed of how long it takes to draft say a direction to pay?

Am at a firm where I’m lucky enough to have a 1600 hour target. Considering moving to a firm with a 2000 hour target (much better salary). How much of an impact on my life (life/work balance, stress levels, etc.) would those extra 400 hours make?

Has anyone volunteered their time with a start-up accelerator? My firm already gives pro Bono hours to work with one non-profit accelerator, and I would like to propose getting that same credit for working with another slightly niche non-profit accelerator (think renewable energy focused). I currently spend ~50% of my time working with startup & VC clients, and would like to grow that area of my practice. I worry about volunteering without a partner or senior associate also involved (4th yr).

Do you bill the time you spend reading emails you’re copied on (that you read to stay in the loop on a deal)? Any tips here? I’m a few years into practicing & probably lose at least an hour a day to this.

If an employment agreement has a restrictive covenant that the employee cannot join the board of a competing business, but “competing business” is undefined, how do you make that determination?
