I’m a junior designer. I want a raise. I just graduated, but I’ve worked as an intern at 9 agencies and as a full time designer at 2. Is that enough experience to ask for a promotion?

Without meaning to sound blunt, just wanting a raise isn’t a good enough reason to get one. It really comes down to if you’re stepping up in your role, doing more or better work than was originally expected of you when hired at the level you’re at. If you believe you’re deserving of a raise earlier than a standard annual review, put your case together as to why and chat to your manager, but just wanting one isn’t a reason.

Consider your internal and external market value with your 9 internships and 2 year experience, and work you’ve done to date. Will other agencies pay more for you? If a lot more maybe you should interview else where. Otherwise you’re going to need to articulate other than doing your job. What have you’ve done to prove you deserve more? Simply doing your job over a period of time does not constitute a raise..

9 internships!?

Try to answers this honestly, and take no offense. Are you good? Do you provide significantly more value than other junior designers at the company? Unfortunately, past experience is only valuable when negotiating for a new job. Once your in a place you’re value is determined only by what you’re doing for them.

Your performance determines your promotion. Not your past experience. Sorry.

Where the hell did you find the time for all those internships

Your experience seems great but it’s all about what’s in your book. When looking at candidates the first thing I look at is your work. Everything else is secondary.

As someone who manages a few junior colleagues, I’d say that I’m always more impressed when they are constantly trying to go above and beyond, versus trying to get more recognition/status for simply upholding the expectations of their role. Please know this comes from a place of helpfulness, but if you think you deserve more my by virtue of just existing, it will backfire quickly. Raise your hand to get involved in new business, pitch in without being asked, bring a pro-bono idea that could lead to award submissions. These are things that could at least get you a spot/merit bonus. Agencies want to invest in people who will help business grow / make money. Show them that you’re that person.

9 internships is a red flag to me. That means 9 shops had a shot to bring you on and passed. Not trying to shit in your cereal, just saying (for me, at least) that sort of experience doesn't warrant a raise or promotion.

How long have you been in your current role?

How’s your book?

Thanks! I should’ve provided more details about my role in this company rather than solely my work experience. But, based on your responses, I can definitely make a case for a promotion. I was offered positions at several of the agencies I interned with, and sometimes worked freelance post-internship, but declined full time roles for various reasons. Thanks again for all of the help!

@OP - Five months is way too early to ask for a promotion. You haven’t even been there half a year and you think that they need to reevaluate how much they’re paying you? You agreed to your salary. Now you have to prove to them you are worth more. I’d say you can ask for a promotion and or a raise after a year at the same place. Before that, it’s just jumping the gun.

Curious what’s your current salary and what are you looking for ?

Just wait until your annual review. If you ask for a raise and they refuse, what’s your plan? “I want a raise.” “No.” “Dang! Okay! I’ll get back to work.” If that conversation happens, trust me, you’re never getting a raise.
