I’m a lawyer at a big tech company and debating the value of learning to code. What’s a good language to learn to understand the basics of coding and get some respect from software engineers?

Start with some reading on loops, methods, variables, then take up a free beginner course in Python from Youtube. Python is an easy language to start.

Coursera has some decent Python for beginners as well.

Codeacademy is also beginner-friendly.

LOVE codecademy

I think the best way to learn is interactively, i.e. in an environment where you can type and run the code as you learn. I really like the Udacity, Codecademy, and Treehouse learning platforms. The former two have free and paid tiers; the latter doesn't have a free tier, but does have a free trial. As far a good language to learn for beginners, I recommend Python. It's very versatile and intuitive.

I recommend Python if you're just starting out

"...get some respect from software engineers" that's commendable right there, Sir. The first few comments pretty much cover the basics. Commenting here as a well-wisher. Goodluck on your endeavor!

Get comfortable enough in Linux to do some bash+python and you'll get their respect

Thank you everyone. Now is it worth it? What do I gain being a non-Eng advising Eng folks on legal issues? By learning to code.

I’m a product counsel so most of my work involves looking at Figma flows, data storage and commenting on random aspects of legal compliance of product flow, content and data storage/retention/use.

I recommend buying a Skillshare subscription and learning from there. They offer great prices for learning Python!

Can an employer keep you at work without running water? We don’t have access to running water for the day and our employer won’t let anyone work from home- 15 minutes away for most of us. We are told to use hand sanitizer for our hands and to have a water bottle with us to flush our bathroom waste. I feel like this shouldn’t be okay..

Honestly, I’ve never been more disappointed to be an HR professional than in the last couple years. As someone who has heard and experienced the unprofessionalism during the candidate experience, I literally am questioning daily why I went into this line of work. But I tried to stay and impact the change I want to see. I just am really frustrated by an unprofessional HR Director I encountered during an interview.

Seems like I can never get good redemption rates with Bonvoy points and after a year haven’t been able to use much. Saw that you can sell 100k points on eBay for about $700 after fees...worth it?

What should be the expectation.

Any Deloitte fishes out there that have analyzed the health benefit options for Vyvanse coverage? Both me and my daughter take Vyvanse and I have been burned by plan coverage/prescription benefits in the past. I think the PPO plans actually end up cheaper, all other variables removed.

Can anyone confirm how many leaves we can carry forward for first year and then later each year ?

Hi Fishes,
Let's share your role and yoe if you are above 50LPA

Anyone transferred from consulting into government “industry”? Just curious to experiences. I’d assume WLB is better with worth pay. Also curious about how you got the job! Thanks :)

Hi fishes,

I’m planning to relocate to Bangalore at Bellandur. I’ve been posted at Deloitte Salarpuria softzone area. Does anyone know or have any contacts of Pgs near by bellandur and Green glen layout. I’m looking out for a decent pg for single occupancy. Please Comment your ideas…

Thanks in advance :)

Hi all, new to fishbowl. I am currently a PTA working in homecare. I am considering changing career paths to non-clinical. Everything I search for available jobs in the pay range that I need seems to come up as sales, (Sr, executive, etc) I have zero sales experience, but could see myself working as a healthcare liason, recruiter, care coordinator, or pharm sales rep. I live in Dayton, OH. I would love some insight or feedback. I also see Gpac recruiting popping up, is this a reputable co? Ty!

Manager gives me hard to solve, complex problems like getting a multi stakeholder project organized. This is not my primary job but the chaos was making progress impossible. I create the solution diagrams, drew up project plan, drove discussions to arrive at tech solutions (the team was in analysis paralysis mode) to land a solution with a hard deadline. When the structures are in place, mgr takes it away from me saying this is not my day job - twice, leaving me angry & confused. Thoughts?

👀 To my fellow Floridians,

I’m currently in the later rounds of interviewing for a company called LSQ, as a new grad, for a Jr. UX Designer role. The company seems solid; smaller, but good culture.

My only hesitation leading into what will inevitably be the offer/negotiation part of the process, is that they’ve mentioned a few times that their salary range is $60k-70k. This feels a bit low, given my existing experience, development skills, & award winning projects.

Any insights? Suggestions?

How much weight do you give Glassdoor and other employee reviews? In the process for a referral interview, looked on GD, and the company had a 2.9 with 0% approval of their “young CEO”. Flags included toxic culture, overworking employees, smoke and mirrors hype. It is an agency startup though, so a heavy workload I feel is common. It’s also closer to the field I want to be in, but does not sound like a coaching environment. Should I go forward or just politely decline?
