How would you recommend these attorneys advocate for themselves? (Not sarcasm)
This is an unusual time. But if there are opportunities in your practice area, I would pick a few opportunities and do a screening interview or two. See what your value is somewhere else, see how another place does things. It’s good for perspective. Sometimes you realize the grass isn’t always greener. Sometimes you realize you weren’t advancing where you are or you like better how it’s done elsewhere. It takes a few hours of time and could have impact on your career trajectory.

What’s magical about 3-5? I’m leaving that range now and wondering if I’m losing a window
If you are happy where you are and partnership at your firm is the goal, it’s not magical. Stay where you are. There is something to be said for loyalty. But, if you aren’t sure about your prospects at partnership and there are things you’d like to change re: your practice, the culture, etc., 3-5 year is a sweet spot because you have significant experience, and your billable rates make financial sense for a lateral firm. Plus, you could join another firm and still be on partnership track with your class year. In other words, you won’t need extra time to prove yourself.

Entering that range at the end of this year but want to leave the country for a couple of years. Think I’ll be ok when I come back?
Depends on what you do while you’re gone and how well you can articulate how the experience will make you a better lawyer.
I’m that range now and have wondered, if I’m going to jump ship and switch firms, if now is the time.
It’s always worth exploring. Especially now as everything is remote. Doesn’t take as much effort and energy.

When you say 3-5, so you mean someone entering their third year or someone who has completed 3-5 years (so is a 4th-6th year)?
Generally in years 3-5. No magic timeline.
What practice groups are in demand right now?
Certainly bankruptcy is busy. I’ve seen consistent lateral movement in M&A and investment management. I think firms are warming up to longer term wfh arrangements but I’m not sure how that will play out when law firms fully open up again. There are firms that place diversity as a true and high priority. I think we will see efforts to increase diversity across firms as hiring picks up.
