I’m a manager, cpa, in my mid 30s. I’m considering doing something else. Like completely changing my career, I feel like there’s better things to do than stare at a screen and hope you get put on good engagements. I kinda want to go into graphic design or write code. Idk 🤷‍♀️ I’m just scared at 37 I’m too old to be sucessful in something else and actually learn something completely different.

Do you anticipate working until you’re 67? If so, you’ve only worked about 15 years and still have 30 years left. Do you really want to spend the next 30 years doing something you already know you don’t like or would you rather spend the next 30 years learning something new and knowing you have your CPA to fall back on? Also, now is a great time to do contract work for a busy season and learn something new the rest of the year.

I want to go to medical school. It was the initial plan. Should have stuck with it. The time is going to pass anyway, I say go for it!

What type of medicine would you want to do? Could you satisfy the desire with a PhD program? A lot of PhD programs offer stipends. Like barely enough to scrape by on but you aren’t at least paying out the ass for tuition. We’d need to do a post-bacc or something, but could get a lot of those pre-reqs satisfied at a community college, and if you could get into a PhD program instead you’d be looking more at lost income rather than med-school debt at least. I keep telling myself once I’ll take night classes while I still make b4 $$$ to get my pre-reqs in and then make the plunge and spend a year or two doing research and classes and applying to PhD programs, but it never feels like the right time.

Go for it! I want to switch to insurance

Go for a change, you won't regret it. Maybe product design could be a good fit as it sort of hits on tech and graphics/UX.

I don't know about FAANG, but lots of folks at smaller tech companies are on second or third careers.

I’m also at this phase. Looking for advice of how to do it successfully without going to business school.

Talk to more people and reach out to people on LinkedIn that have transitioned into positions you’re thinking about. Figure out what you’re looking for in your next job/company and then go for it, sometimes you have to just “jump” after a bit of research. I left my firm a year ago and have been extremely happy, however if I wasn’t I would just find another job.

You are not alone. I am in the same boat and thinking of going into the arts. I am currently using the EY learning platform to learn things like animation and music which I hope to go into full time once I can turn it into something meaningful. At this age you have nothing to lose when you go for things that truly interest you. Life is already too short. Live it to the fullest.

Thank you for the response, that makes total sense!
