The list of candidates for senior manager promotion. To be frank it’s like a gift from God and I’m so grateful. I am also really anxious about doing a good job and getting the promotion. A friend told me usually once your name is up, it’s likely you will get it. But I’m super anxious and I don’t know what to do. It’s a really big deal to me. I’m also scared as I feel I won’t have anyone to ask for help or guidance as a senior manager. Idk what do I do. Should I just keep doing what I’m doing? Do I do extra?
I’m a manager myself but I had a lot of similar thoughts moving from a private senior role to public manager role. Sounds like you have a little bit of imposter syndrome which is super common! A trick that works for me is asking “ok I don’t know what to do but if I did know, what would I do?” Or maybe for you “what would I do if I was a senior manager?” And for some reason I’m always able to answer the question at least somewhat!
Learned this from my life coach. Another tip is to get a life coach 😂 dm me if you want details on that

Take a chill pill and just keep performing :)
Yea I wouldn’t be overly anxious for your first year as a SM. Honestly - nothing changes. Also, my manager year to be a SM was the hardest. Bec you had to prove yourself. Now 4th or 5th year of SM is where it gets a little harder. At that point you’re acting as a partner, without the pay and without the title. So some may disrespect you simply because of your title.
Conclusion, you got this. It’s easy.
I was doing everything under the sun. Everything. I was trying to prove myself so I was preparing, reviewing, dealing with clients, business development, engagement economics, marketing material. So basically doing things as a senior thru partner. But once Youre a SM, you hopefully have seniors and managers helping you.
I don't know what line of services you are in but for me, I feel no different moving up to Sr. Manager/Director in consulting. You have had performed at that level for years and maybe you did not even notice it.
Ah, I never asked them, I asked my peers. And mostly, figured it out myself since there is no right or wrong way. It was that I must be able to defense the reason to do things based on the way we intepret the guidance or standards. I think audit partners and tax partners have more technical knowledge. I'm in consulting and partners are more focus in sales. They are not the best to ask and would prefer us not to bother them unless absolutely needed.
I guess how do I stop this weird anxiety
Trust that they wouldn’t put you up for promotion if they didn’t think you deserved it and were ready. They don’t just hand out promos to anyone at the SM level so let it comfort you that they believe in you.
You are NEVER alone in Big4. That’s the whole point of the model. You always have someone to ask a question, seek advice, bounce things around with, etc. You are not expected to know everything on Day 1 of being a SM or even a PPED. You are expected to know when to ask for help! :)
Just keep doing what you’ve been doing to get to this point. Push the thoughts of promo aside and focus on being you and doing the work. Let the rest take care of itself.
