I'm a mid-level and I accidentally stole work from a junior. Now I feel bad

I don’t think you should feel bad but I would probably call the Junior and explain the situation. Say that the next time a project comes up you’ll keep her in mind. Sometimes just laying it out there and being human makes for a better work relationship in the long run.

Agree. I remember what it was like to be a junior and feel like the seniors hated you almost as much as the partners. I also remember being in a constant state of anxiety trying to find work and being annoyed that the seniors who were so busy kept getting fed all the work.. I’d at least follow up on the email to say something like, “sorry my VPN cut out and I didn’t see that you had already responded. Will try to get some other work routed your way.”

Define “accidentally”

If that happened to me as a junior, I’d be annoyed, but would assume that the mid level missed my email. And the fact that they choose you over the junior isn’t your fault. The seniors/other juniors I work with would probably offer to split the work in this kind of case, if possible.

It wasn’t your fault, don’t worry about it. Sucks you have to do the work now, but hey billables! I once covered someone’s vacation and ended up stealing the deal. The deal team asked me to stay on, and I said yes thinking they would keep us both on the team but they kicked him off. That guy did all the grunt work (diligence) before going on vacation, and I swooped in and did the bomb ass closing of a public company merger. I felt bad but also it was an awesome learning experience outside my normal practice area.
