I’m a new attorney and really struggling with daily work life. The 9-5 or rather (8-8) lifestyle is so monotonous and boring at times. Any tips to make it feel like you dont live at work?? I’m 26 and would still like to have some semblance of a life that isnt just work.

Don’t talk about work outside of work. Get in do your job and leave it at the office as much as possible. This will help create a better boundary and space for things other than work, even if it is just 30 minutes an evening doing something other than work.

I think it’s really hard if you start out WFH because it’s hard to draw those clear boundaries.

If you’re going to the office, I recommend developing a ritual for when you get home to signal to your body and mind that there has been a transition to home life. For me, it is a brisk walk outside with my dog and then prepping dinner. I use that time to let the workday go. I do sometimes have to log back in after dinner, but those two hours are sacred to me.

Do nice things in the mornings and evenings (work out, play an instrument if you do that, make dinner if you like cooking, go for walks, etc.). Otherwise, do stuff on the weekends and on vacation.

This is called being an adult.

Easy there, shooter—young OP is asking for advice about keeping life interesting, not seeking condescending remarks.

Once you get into the swing of things and become proficient at what you do you should hopefully see a little more time open up in your schedule, just make sure to set boundaries. You’re replaceable to the firm, gotta remember that. The early grind is necessary for experience and resume building. It sucks but it’s something most of us have to push through. If you’re truly unhappy with your current work-life balance talk to a mentor or some law school friends—see what they do. There’s always government jobs too, not great pay but about as close to a 40hr workweek as you can get.

Do what everyone else does. Any excuse to meet a friend/date/bartender for a drink once or twice a week after work. And then make sure at least one weekend day or evening counts. Counts being 4am drunken shenanigans, a 90 minute run followed by brunch with friends, or a day racing cars or motorcycles.

Why are you regularly working such long hours?

That’s their problem. They need to hire more people. If you’re bored and overworked, seems like it’s time to look for a new job. In the meantime, you need to be articulating that you don’t have the capacity to take on more work.

SAME! I'm a first year associate, one of two associates for four partners, and I work similar hours. I recommend separating your work and life.

- Take your FULL BREAKS- lunch, bathroom, etc. Take all of them- unapologetically.
- Find people to talk to OUTSIDE of the firm. (Other professionals, law school friends, etc)
- Don't focus on how much free time you "don't have." Look at the time you DO have and make the most of it.
- Make time for things that you like to do! Go out! Learn new things.
- Don't get involved in office drama- they're attorneys, they can figure it out.

You need a goal outside of work. If there is a skill you are interested in learning you should pursue it. You don’t need to be the best at it but you will slowly improve if you stick with it and your life will change. You don’t need to make money from it.

I’m a first year (soon to be second year). I experienced the same thing when I first started. I also noticed on weeks where I was able to truly work a 9-5, those extra few hours in the day don’t really make a difference as far as the monotony of working a M-F. Just something you have to adjust to over time. I’ve found being more intentional with my time on weekends helps.

The start is very tough. Mentally all 24 hours are devoted to the 10-12 working ones. You'll get into a rhythm after a while and enjoy the non-working hours more. Weekends and evenings are key. Whether you need calm relaxing ones or action packed adventure ones, you get used to them being your motivation (as sad as it is)

Work is monotonous. I hate to break it to you but so are marriage and kids and most daily life. That’s why we have the entertainment industry to help us through it.

I was happiest working 10am-midnight/1am with a gym break in the middle M-W and then tapering off into a 10-2 Thursday and Friday as work permitted.

I’ve been working in family law for several years and my best piece of advice is: Boundaries. You need time off from this type of work or it will drive you crazy. If you don’t absolutely need to work until 8pm, don’t. Take at least one day a week for yourself with no work stuff if possible. Use your vacation time. If you need more paralegal help, ask for it, and don’t be afraid to delegate.

Which sounds better?

Deloitte Risk and Financial Advisory Analyst
- I think it is more IT Audit focused?
- Perk is that it’s a location I want, I can save money on rent, and I know people

KPMG Strategy Associate
-perhaps more interesting work, but also likely more hours
- less desirable location

Which one sounds better in terms of WLB, growth, etc? And would a rotation program be better than these? Thank you in advance!

Question for PC gamers: since i won't be buying a graphics card any time soon, i was wondering if it would even be worth it to upgrade Mobo/chipset. Current specs are: i5 7600k (OC to 4.4ghz, only supports up to 2400 speed ram, 4 cores no hyperthreading), GTX 1070 OC'd, m.2 nvme storage, 32gb 3200 cl 15 ram even though it's not supported). I know these are pretty old parts, but...yeah is it even worth it to spend the money

Looking at houses around $800k. Just got introduced to the idea of a jumbo loan…. I have about $125,000 in equity in my current house, which will probably be closer to $100k by the time closing is done. My local lender is requiring 20% down on a jumbo loan, which I don’t have. My first question is—does anyone know of a lender who doesn’t require 20% on a jumbo? Second, I have about $100k equity in a rental property but lender requires 40% down on investment properties for a HELOC. Help!

My laptop died. IT needs to check it physically. I’m 300 miles away from the nearest office and 1000 miles away from my office. I’ll be driving there first thing tomorrow - if you were a partner, would you be pissed that I’ll probably have to take a day off even if I’m at an office? Is it my fault that I’m out of town?

M&A Hours Check. What’s your year end target looking like? Think about 80 percent of the firm’s group is not going to hit hours. Not sure how sustainable this is. Definitely have great leadership that are swallowing the brunt of it, but I’m curious if any survivors of 08 ever had a really bad hours year and still survived. Obviously M&A takes the brunt during these times, but are firms thinking that they want to be poised for when things return back to normal or are they about to let the ball go

That moment when your "smart" plan to boost your hours this month by working the Labor Day weekend (thus turning down all the fun plans your friends made) becomes sitting on your hands & feeling dumb because all the partners are too busy to delegate anything. The worst kind of "off" day is one you planned to /wanted to work, but there's no billable work...

A year ago I got fired after a three month stint at a firm for having an incredibly embarrassing reaction to a stressful situation. I was so burnt out that I didn't care what bridges I burned and I burned with aplomb. I've been able to forgive myself and make changes so it won't recur. I'm in a job I'm not excited about but which pays the bills and is not practicing so I could get my head right without the stress of being liable for malpractice. I don't know how to rebuild.

Current consultant in law school part time. I make 83k rn at Deloitte. When I get to my next level this fall, it’ll be around 95k. By the time I graduate in a few years, I’ll most likely be making 120-140k. I love law and want to pursue this, but law school might be a waste if I don’t get into big law (which is already so slight) since I’m part time and not in a T14. I feel like any other salary in the legal field I’d receive at that time would be lower than what I would already be making at D.

Any tips on how to keep my plate full with work? I just moved from civil legal services to Biglaw as a staff attorney (9 YOE), and I’m looking for strategies on how to get work from partners. Maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but I think that long-arm statutes are terrible for our system. You shouldn't be able to file in the state that you live in. As a policy matter, I feel the default should always be where the defendant lives unless the contract states otherwise.
