I focused on building a go-to core team that helped me define our goals and approach. Made a big difference. It would have been easy to build a team with people just like me, but I didn't, I went for different perspectives, opinions, backgrounds, experiences. This made all the difference -

Congratulations! 1. Focus on building a team around you. Hopefully you have the makings of that already but nothing to help you be impactful as a group of people you trust and they trust you back. With that really hone your prioritization and delegation skills. 2. Make sure you have mentors, sponsors, and frankly just peers you trust. That was the hardest part for me. You get here and so many people helped you but then you’re a bit on your own. You need support; sometimes just for your own sanity. 3. Enjoy it. Find ways to enjoy it. It’s not worth it otherwise. Good luck!

Keep pushing yourself to do it. Remind yourself that’s it’s critical to your long term success and your team’s. As you hear many of us say - this is a marathon, not a sprint. Short-term answer of you doing it and controlling it will negatively impact your long-term success. This is also not an individual sport. The more your team knows and learns (and sometimes mistakes teach us the best lessons), the more effective you are. It takes a while to get the right balance too. It’s important to understand and keep chugging along.

Congrats - it is a major milestone ! Your success for the first year into the new role is mostly about resetting your mindset . Now you are an owner of the firm . You are “them” and the buck stops with you . This was the hardest for me when I made partner ten years ago . Your success is dependent on earning the respect of your peers and convincing them to work with you . So spend some time expanding your network and helping other partners . It is a big investment you are making for your success . Get more senior partners as your mentors . You will need it ! You probably have realized already that partnership models only work on a pay it forward basis . So focus heavily on the junior talent and be their champion . Become the partner everyone wants to work for . Good luck - it’s the beginning of an exciting new journey .

Congratulations! One thing our leaders talk about is that if you become a partner, you will likely spend much more time as a partner in the firm than you do at any other position - and quite possibly more than at all those positions combined. What does that mean? - Cultivate a longer-term mindset. Stop thinking about the quarter or the year as your goal. Think in multi-year blocks. That sounds obvious but it’s a real adjustment from the mindset of how it feels to try and make it to partner. Took me a few years to begin thinking this way. - Consider what really excites and motivates you. A lot of people push through in areas that aren’t maybe so interesting to them pre-partner because they’re afraid to take a risk and try something different when trying to make partner. Having made it, you get the chance to take a leap without worrying about how it affects your partnership prospects. Take advantage of that. - The job stays interesting only if you reinvent yourself from time to time. All the money you make doesn’t make a boring job enjoyable. Find ways to challenge yourself.

P2: a couple of examples - 1) I chose to transition a growing and lucrative client relationship to another leader because I realized that I did not want to be working with that organization long term and it would be better for my firm; my client, and me for a different person to lead the work. 2) I submit annual plans because I’m obligated to do so from an administrative standpoint. But the career question I’m asking myself and talking with mentors about is what I want to be doing in a few years and what skills I want to have. Not how I’m going to “make my plan” or anything resembling that. We don’t have much of a hitting your numbers culture at ZS anyway (similar, I think, to MBB in this regard), but I was definitely more cognizant of metrics 10 years ago than I am now. Now, I mainly look at them and shrug them off whether they’re higher or lower than planned.

Are tucks MBB numbers really that good? I saw a student on Reddit say about 35 mbb internships were granted in their year out of about 150 applicants (70-90 interviews per firm). Not sure what to make of this. Additionally, is it true that the battle is to get interviews and once you get one, then it’s just a matter of you performing (I.e., you’re no longer competing against classmates)?

I’ll be glad to share it, but because it would look like some kind of a stealth pitch I’ll wait. Thank y’all.

Isnt it weird that they dont pay you a bonus after 10 years at the firm because you are serving your notice. I think its unreasonable to work for the whole year in question, be on the payroll when the bonus is paid out, contribute signifanct revenue to the team and still get paid nothing because its 'discretionary' once you tell them you are leaving.
