I'm a new mom with a 10 month old. I only work 25-30 hours a week and I'm killing it at work, exceeding my goals, etc. But I feel a little guilty that I just got a promotion and I don't work as many hours as my colleagues. My husband is also a recruiter and works 40+ hours a week. But being able to pick my baby up at 2:30pm every day is worth it. Am I wrong?

I’m confused about what type of acknowledgement you’re looking for here.
- Pat on the back.
- “You go, girl!”
- You’ve earned your promotion!
- “That’s not fair to your colleagues or spouse.”
- Brisk mutual nod and we won’t talk about the elephant in the room.

You’re doing good for yourself. Don’t second guess it and take the W.

like

Lol I’m not quite sure to be honest 😬 Is this okay? Am I nuts!

I am sure you deserve it! Nothing wrong with getting your work done efficiently!

On top of your promotion, I present you a “Hero Mom” reward 🏆 🎉🎈🎊

likeuplifting

Are you sure you’re not being preferred over colleagues who are minorities? Do you have a PT schedule? Or are you just efficient? I worked in a department where the supervisor only had eyes for the white attorney on the team who was part time and of course she’s the only one who got promotions despite not killing it objectively.

like

This comment is ridiculous to me. Our company empowers and encourages diversity. I’m a woman but not a minority. I’m thankful to work for a company that is principled and not political. Performance is based on performance period. There are only 5 of us on the entire US recruiting team. I’m pretty insulted you would ask to be honest.

You accomplishing more in a day (aka less hours) is nothing to feel guilty about. If anything you’re leading by example for your colleagues.

like

If you’re getting your work done and being efficient so that you can spend the rest of your time with your family, I don’t see any issues. No need to feel guilty

like

I mean research shows that moms tend to be the most efficient and productive employees - more motivation not to lollygag at work.

The American work culture that treats long hours as a virtue in and of themselves is weird. Why the obsession on living in the office, regardless of how you're actually performing.

like

Being efficient shouldn’t mean you have to take on more work. Take it as a gift.

like

You’re paid to do a job not to work a certain number of hours. Are you guilty that your metrics aren’t as good because you work less or are your metrics just as good? Because if they’re just as good as everyone else’s I think maybe they need to step it up or something.

like

Yes. Also I’m the most senior person on the team by a lot. My team is extremely junior and I mentor a lot. I have 10+ years and most have 1-4 years. I’m an SME and I get the hardest roles because I can handle them. I just don’t work a million hours because I source and close very specialized roles. But I kill it.

I don’t understand the question “Am I wrong?”

Why are you wrong? Working mothers that return to the workforce after maternity leave are often criticized so much. You work for a good company that’s aware you’re part-time and rewarding you for your job performance. Why would you be in the wrong for anything?

Don’t feel guilty because the company gave you the promotion as they saw fit. If your colleagues wanted that promotion, they would have risen to the challenge part-time or full-time.

like

They aren’t actually aware I work 25-30 hours 😬 that’s the only issue I have. I produce as if I’m working 40.

I wouldn’t feel guilty about it because you’re being more efficient so you’re getting your work done faster. However, if they are giving less work because they slowed recruiting and are about to do mass layoffs
.that would be the concerning situation.

No layoffs at all! I’m so fortunate! I also get the absolute hardest roles at the company and fill them quickly. Normally I get principal engineering, architect or specialist roles.

Need advice!

I currently have 10% shares in a very small f&b group owns 2 restaurant outlets.

One of them have been hit with covid and we are suffering in sales. Our director somehow don’t believe in marketing and will not budge to allocate resources to hire a personnel. Our staff are underpaid so there are no incentives for them to go beyond their SOW.

What are some of the ways to drive more sales?

If we have to raise a small round to cover the next 6 months of OPEX - is it a feasible?

Is IB worth the sacrifice of WLB? Obvious pay is really good but are the prestige and pay worth it if you’re planning on only doing it for a couple years?

Currently working at an IRA with great WLB. Honestly I love my job, the firm, and people I work with.

Also doing MBA part time at a T15 school. Thinking about switching to IB but I’ve done my research and I think I would burn out of IB in two years but I might be ok with that for the opportunities after.

My remit quadrupled+ in a recent re-org with no increase in pay/promotion, my new director is new to the company and was zero help, and I was passed over for recent promotion during the comp cycle. Now they have taken credit for the project I’ve been building over the past year+ without giving me props whatsoever to higher ups. What is the best plan of action here?

There are a decent amount of benefits in my position, the biggest being WLB, which is what has kept me here for so long. But I’m getting frustrated. What would you do?

My current role started out as a way to increase my skills, but for the past year the majority of what I’ve done is transcribing data between systems, which is one of the things I’m very bad at. I had a good reputation in the company before this, but now every day I feel like a failure because I keep making mistakes.

The level of shock and anger I’m seeing on my LinkedIn regarding the Twitter layoffs is puzzling. While unfortunate, didn’t we all know this was coming for months? They also get paid / benefits for 4mos + severance (correct me if I’m wrong). And it’s also only like a few thousand people at a tech company. I feel like they have a far better set up for recovery than others who have been laid off already where we all just moved on after seeing the headline. Thoughts?
