All the same things that make any relationship outstanding. Respect. Transparency. Build a trust based enduring relationship. Connect as a human being. Strong positive open communication. Take time to develop it and not rush it. Trust isn’t built overnight. Show an interest and find out what’s important to him and what makes him tick. Set appropriate boundaries and expectations. Respect that he operates more as an introvert. Find ways to give him successes to grow confidence and be less introverted. If he feels safe he may be less introverted. Get rid of the bias related to statements about him being older or being your dad as he may pick up on this- perhaps why he is coming off as reserved? Reframe to see if there is anything that you can learn from his experience? See if there are opportunities for reverse mentoring for things he could learn from you.
Treat him like a person? Not sure why him being older is an issue? Is it making you uncomfortable?
