Im a PL account manager at a small independent agency in kingsburg, ca. I’ll be having my review soon & want to ask for a significant raise but have no idea how much to ask for. been at agency for 7 years, getting paid 50k/year. I feel like I’m being under paid, especially because I get no commission, I work on farm & commercial accounts (on top of a $650k PL book), manager asked me to take on accounting work & commercial/farm claims reporting/review. My position is unique. how much should I ask

The range is about 60k-90k. With 7 years of experience, I feel like you should be at least at 75k. Have you considered applying with other companies? A competing offer is great leverage.

like

I would have thought California market would be much higher. $50k with a decent bonus at least? The only thing to keep in mind if you get a competing offer (which I would recommend) is that you need to be prepared to leave. I know college graduates in insurance expecting $70k and getting it in the Chicagoland area on the underwriting side. I’ve left companies after 5 and 6 years at each respective companies and received my largest increases (between 20-30% each time).

like

I think you're being underpaid for sure. At a minimum you should be making $65k IMO, and I would personally go for something higher in the negotiations...maybe even up to 80k to see if they drop it to 70-75k

like

Thanks so much for the feedback! it sounds like I may have to apply at other agencies to get a competing offer.. it sucks that for the past few years, I’ve had to beg to get a raise larger than just an “inflation” raise just to be at the bare minimum of what everyone else is making

Considering you seven years of experience, you should ask for around 65-80k. Exclusive of the other benefits. Best of luck, OP!

I would definitely ask for at least 65K. I have been doing insurance for only 18 most, 6 in commercial lines and just hit 52K.

Not a company I’d want to work for anymore.
