I’m a pretty anxious person and I’ve realized that a remote work environment only makes me more so - not being able to read people’s tone well, email/ping responses being more delayed than they would be in a conversation, the awkwardness of virtual meetings, etc. I’m in therapy and will discuss this there but would love to hear some tips about how people manage work anxiety specifically in a remote consulting environment.

I keep remembering that what feels awkward to me is probably not even a second thought to the other person. I also keep a task list and ensure my focus goes to that rather than burning energy on being anxious about trying to work out things outside of my control.

Thanks for sharing!

Following because I could have written this exact thing. It's so hard to not feel like everyone is upset or that I'm on the right track when we're never face to face.

I agree that the task list has helped me a lot. I have a weekly outlined list in OneNote. It also helps to show everything I've done at the end of the week. And also periodically remind myself that everyone wants me to do well, no one is hoping for me to fail.

For further context, I switched jobs during the pandemic and my previous job was at a small company that was 100% in person (until COVID) ... so it’s been a pretty drastic shift.

Nothing much to add except I feel the same! I started a new job in COVID and I feel like I’m always bothering people with dumb questions when I ping them. Every ping seems like such a big deal, ya know? I am an over thinker. Anyways we are all human so I try to remind myself my feelings aren’t rare :)

Been there! I switched my company 2 months before the COVID shutdown. I hardly know anyone except the people I work with on a daily basis. Here's what has sort of worked for me - 1. I try to do any new communication over a ping first (hi, I'm ABC, this is regarding XYZ, can we connect on this at DEF time?, How about a Skype/Teams call?), followed by a quick call (I thought call would be quicker, I wanted to discuss XYZ. Great, thanks for your time, will summarize in an e-mail and share with you also) and then bring it to e-mails 2. I have set up informal chats with my reportees for once a week/ once in two weeks 3. Text/Call my seniors once a week with status update on everything + ask for informal help (who can I reach out to understand our L&D offerings?) 4. Find a peer to speak with preferably not in your department - I had one till 2 months ago. I used to ask really stupid questions without judgement (how do I download this report?, Where do I upload my expenses? Do I have to attend this training?) I'm up for anymore suggestions.
