Gusto I’m a product designer hoping to switch industries from the public sector to private. I am struggling because I’m starting to see a lot of pushback on the fact that I don’t have industry specific work. So I’m really curious how much working in a specific industry effects your career path.

Hello! I need some insight here. I was part of a massive layoff 2 months ago. I accepted an offer and have been working at my current job for a week. I forgot to withdraw for another application and I was just contacted yesterday by FIS Global with an offer. I’m not sure what to do. FIS Global has slightly better benefits but I’m scared about the job stability. It’s what worries me the most.

Freelance Motion Designer here with 10+ years of experience. Explainer videos are my specialty, but I also do digital marketing content like social ads, animated logos, etc. I want to take my freelance work to a full-time motion designer position.

Any other motion designers out there that have had success taking their career to the next level? What did it take? Should I learn more skills? Perhaps market myself more?

Any good hiring manager will look at your design thinking methodologies despite your industry experience.
Obviously you can help yourself in creating bespoke and exploration case studies on a problem you solve in the field you are targeting.
For example if you want to work in mobile games, then I would suggest to explore a problem you see and add it in your portfolio explaining how you would solve the problem.
I look at overall experience. Example can you or have you done enterprise data heavy design in any industry. As UX designers we need to be flexible and moving industries is greatly appreciated. I love bringing folks into my team from other industries! Their experiences to solve problems from different Industries often crosses over. It’s great to have a fresh set of eyes on things. Good luck
