Also I’d wait to see where you’re staffed before you buy a ton of new outfits. I’ve only worn my suits a handful of times. My client sites have been mostly business casual
Agree with this. Did a shopping spree at WHBM only to find out my client basically wears Jeans... 🤣🤣
Echoing C1. Wait until you see your projects, some of my clients wear jeans daily especially in California, whereas Nyc banking clients would wear suits.
That being said, I’ve always found Ann Taylor, the Loft, and Banana Republic to be the best spots to buy good quality basics, like black or white blouses, well fitted pants, cute yet appropriate skirts and dressses, and nice cropped jackets / blazers
The list above is good but I would also get some comfortable flats. I like to wear black pants and skirts plus a bright colored blouse and matching colored flats. Rothys are my faves.
Yes! I don't wear heels any more at all. And my most worn suits are navy. They can be dressed up and down, depending on formality. Another option is rent the runway for pieces outside your staples listed above.
My bag I use is a Ricardo bag I got on Amazon for like $50. It's amazing. I'm going to switch to a backpack soon, but don't feel pressured to buy expensive stuff out the gate. Build your work wardrobe and accessories slowly.
Tumi backpack 🙌
as a more general recommendation, buy work clothes with a similar silhouette to what you wear in normal life. it makes it easier to get dressed and also makes it easier to adapt to a casual client (or dress up a causal outfit on the weekend).
also, wearing a shorter than knee length skirt/dress makes it clear you are junior. don't do this.
Jcrew Edie pants are my go to. They’re comfy yet professional. When packing, I decide if I’ll have a navy week or a black week so I don’t have to pack two different colored shoes. Don’t over think the fashion, I did my first week and stuck out like a sore thumb at my client site
Don’t overspend on some fancy trendy expensive bag. Nobody cares about your suitcase. Really. It may have some “cool” factor while you roll it around the airport or into the client site. But, if you had a regular bag, nobody would think a bit less of you
Thank you for all your tips everyone! Really appreciate it :)
Basics to have:
- white blouse
- black pencil skirt
- black suit
- black heels
- nude heels
Then build from there w/accessories and more fun tops. I looked at what other people were wearing to see how far I could push it
Starter bag - kate spade/michael kors?
^this👏🏻👏🏻 looking like a waiter is so true. I generally go for light blue or pink blouses
Wait until you’re staffed. My first project was remote for the first 9 months. I wore pajamas for almost a year.
But just in general a few pairs of nice slacks, a few pairs of jeans, some button downs, some blouses (that work with jeans and slacks), flats and heels and that’s it
