Don’t kid yourself - you’ll find both cultures on either side

I would broadly agree with OP. Although both sides have some good and bad examples, the finance culture is harsher and less forgiving, like the work.

I don’t know why this needs to be said but meme pages run by people who don’t even necessarily work in that industry are not overly indicative of what that industry is like.

FWIW I 110% agree, I just find the online communities interesting as I've spent time in both but have only worked at one consulting firm in my life

Unpopular opinion Given the choice between the two, most people would choose investment banking just because it pays better. Therefore, banking has a higher barrier to entry and can be more selective. So, generally speaking, the people in that career are a little “better” professionally speaking in one way or another - smarter, better schooling (often because they were simply born into a wealthy family), better connections (ditto), better grades, etc. Consulting therefore gets either the top social echelon people who ate some humble pie when they didn’t graduate at the top of their class and therefore couldn’t break into IB, or people from lower echelons who managed to overachieve and landed a career in consulting (humble, sometimes liberal beliefs, for a different set of reasons). A LOT of people in consulting are from the middle and lower class, and I find very few from truly upper class backgrounds - whereas in IB those ratios are flipped.

Actually think your views are true for pre 2008, when upside in banking was much higher and it attracted far more people. Nowadays MBB is actually more selective than IB. Work actually requires far more independent thinking as well.

I started my career on the trading floor and ended the last 10 in consulting, let’s be specific and compare attributes Talent & Caliber - Quant Traders and IBD have good pockets of talent; but any given day top tier consulting talent is a different league Culture: it’s dog eats dog on both ends, I would say trading/IBD was way worse, so is consulting but there is definitely no room for empathy- your only good as your last sale and your only good if you can be opportunistic Both are equally the same , both destroy the inner soul in you...after a 13 year career there are times I look for my heart

like

Agree. Worked in both worlds.

Well IB makes way more money...

Definitely agree. Wall Street oasis definitely has that generic chad undertone to a lot of their posts non career related. Sometimes I’m almost embarrassed by the shit I read on that site. Completely agree that consulting filters for a more normal human being whereas banking has folks sometimes inept of empathy

Who let the banking analyst in here? 🧐 But it goes with the work. I'll tell you the more relaxed the projects are the more easy going everyone is. But the more high intensity is when youll see the drinking and "frat bro" and working on weekends stuff. IB is 247 hard times, so the live fast culture comes with it. Don't have much time to relax means you go all out when you get the chance to.

“More liberal political beliefs”? As if that’s a good thing lol

Pencil dipped in paint and shoved in my new electric sharpener. There are acts of destruction daily in my classroom. Most of my classes are 25 kids in a small room. When my attention is taken for a second, someone does something like this. Gluing things to counters. Hiding paintbrushes instead of cleaning them. 15 years, I've tried everything to cultivate a respectful classroom culture, and they just don't care. I'm so tired. So, so tired. I don't know how much longer I can do this.

Currently in consulting. Have always liked Organizational Change Management, but have also been interested in Project Management. Between an Associate PM at a F50 company and an OCM Consultant at a boutique, which would you pick? Same city. PM pay is a little higher but workload will likely be more and culture will be more cut-throat. I was thinking I can probably get into PM later if consulting did not work out, and this hopefully won't be my last time getting an offer from a big firm.
