I’m a relatively new lawyer (3 years), and I’ve never had something like this come up before. I recently received a letter at work from Marquis Who’s Who, informing me that I was nominated and approved as a candidate to represent Women in Law from my state in an upcoming edition of Who’s Who in America. Is this worth accepting, or is it kind of frivolous? Thank you for any guidance!

Got this one too. So did all the first years at my firm. Did some googling and apparently Marquis used to be somewhat respected/reliable because they had been publishing this list since 1900 with some measure of exclusivity, but was bought in the late 90s/early 2000s by a different company who now sends out, I kid you not, millions of these letters. Then they charge 40 bucks to put you on the list and they sell your info.

Definitely a waste of time and I would be embarrassed to have my name on this list.

Thank you! That was my gut instinct, so I appreciate you confirming and sharing some additional info.

like

there are plenty of people on the list who are respectable but i wouldn’t be drawing attention to it personally. you can literally nominate yourself for it. the only pro i’ve heard is if you’re a smaller practitioner it makes you more visible on search engines lol.

That makes sense! Thank you!

They want you to buy the book and certificate!

I just got offered a job with a firm that has billable hour requirements. I’ve never had had billable hours. Is is appropriate to ask what the billable requirements are? I have a good idea from someone I know who works in a different department but want to confirm what they told me. They also provided vacation time of 3-5 weeks. I’m assuming that’s work weeks, but is that appropriate to ask for clarification? I don’t want them to think that’s all I care about, but these are important to me.
