I’m a rising third year in charge of a second year. I’m really struggling with the transition to becoming a midlevel. I got a talking to yesterday for missing some of the junior’s mistakes and I’m really scared to get fired…any advice on how to be better at managing juniors?

You won’t get fired! It’s tough reviewing someone so junior - you more or less have to review *everything* they do closely, until you get a sense of what they know and can be trusted to do with less supervision. Build that review time into their deadlines to you. Also build that into how many deals you agree to take on - they will all take more time than they would have as a junior. Training your own help does not always feel like help (it’s also work), but it’s essential in a job that’s really an apprenticeship, and it can be really rewarding as you see folks learn and grow (and help you and others loads!).

The good news is that you’ve now learned the lesson that once the junior’s mistakes leave your desk, they’ve transformed into your mistakes and you won’t get fired the first time. The talking to was designed to cause this level of concern and apparently it was done properly for that.

Absolutely the worst feeling and I’ve been there. I am going to sound silly here but being a supervisor is not about flexing and is more matter of fact. Give feedback but ensure the work product you send on to your supervisor is final and ready for submission. If you miss something, don’t make excuses. If you are struggling supervising, ask your partner for advice and for some mentoring. Ultimately, the goal is that by the time you are a partner the majority of your time is supervising and reviewing and there isn’t a single law school that teaches that.
