Account Management

I’m a seasoned AD and am considering an VP Account Supervisor position but feel like I am losing earned value without having Director in my title even though it’s a VP position. Am I overreacting?

Don’t do it

I wouldn’t do it, the CS game is a title chase for the first 10-12 years. I took a lesser title at an agency where VP means something different - but that’s after 16years and I get the salary I want.

Yes, you’re overreacting

This sounds like a pharma title.

If your only hesitation is the title then definitely take it. As long as you’re making the same or more money and you feel like it’s the type of work you want to do then a title change can easily be explained if you did end up leaving in the future and started interviewing. I’ve also been on the job hunt lately and it seems like account titles are really changing with “Director” level roles varying between agencies in scope of work and experience needed.

Titles matter a lot in this industry. I would negotiate hard for the title you want. Just hard to do if you’ve already interviewed knowing the title. OR if you did take it, put director on LinkedIn. I wouldn’t publicize the account Sup even with the VP

That’s a good idea. Put it on LinkedIn as VP Account Services

What is equivalent for VP Account Supervisor?

I think it’d be an Associate Account Director... but not positive since it’s not that common of a title. However, I am considering a similar move (also in account).. and if I took it, I’d make sure there is room for title growth, the comp is comparable to my current one, and the work/ client relationship is close. Is the position you’re considering parallel in profile?

I’d negotiate hard to keep the Director in the title

It does seem like a backwards move, even if you are getting more money. Who would you report to?

Actually, the President

Nope. Don’t do it. If they want you they’ll make it work. On paper it will also look like a demotion.

If anyone wants to join a boutique HR & Talent Advisory consulting firm, Kincentric is hiring for an Associate Partner role! Location doesn’t really matter, but preferably in IL, NY, or ATL.
