I'm a self-contained teacher of about 9 students with differing levels of autism or intellectual disability. If the board decides that our school is going all virtual, how am I going to teach them??? They require different accommodations at school they don't have at home..

I think holding a meeting (pain in the butt, I know) to change their accommodations would be the first step, since you can’t provide certain ones in the home setting. I taught my self-contained K-2 autism class and summer school class both online from March to the end of June. I used Google Classroom and Boom cards. I was able to modify assignments to the different levels of the students, and both options would allow me to see how they did on the assignments. It was tough, and A LOT of work put into creating the assignments, but it got the job done.

I made a google site for each of my kids that addressed their current levels and IEP goals. For one kid I would have a YouTube video they would watch, printable activities, and online games (BoomCards normally) for each IEP goal

Many of our highest needs students in districts throughout CA are heading back to school 😳

Really? Interesting. I see the point and kudos for taking an interest in the special needs kids but my district doesn't do that

Boom Cards!!!! They are a lifesaver.

I am in your boat. I am reading specialist at a middle school. How do you teach virtual reading to kids who struggle with reading. There is only so many videos to record. Reading takes practice with reading. How does anyone get get at reading? It’s to read. They will not be able to read like they need to at home!

I know! If we do go all virtual I'm going to have to buy a lot of manipulatives.

How ? This is hard you need all the help

I did weekly class meetings 3x a week and then met 1:1 with kids at least 2-3 times a week. Kids who couldn’t access I would have parent consults instead. During the 1:1 I shared my screen and used it for “discrete trials” and took data in a binder. Also did a lot of reading by projecting Reading A-Z books. They definitely benefited by super structured lessons. If you have kids who can manipulate the screens themselves I also would recommend Peardeck or seesaw where they can actually draw on the activity or worksheet. I also made BoomCards to match their IEP goals and objectives
