I’m a senior 1 in audit , is it too late to switch to tax ? I think I would enjoy tax planning a lot more than audit ...

Is your goal to be a tax partner? If not I think as S1 its a good time to consider if you are interested in making the jump to industry, because once you get into tax Ms, my opinion / what i have seen is you’re starting to pigeonhole yourself a bit where your progression won’t serve you much outside of the world of tax (FP&A, controller, industry roles other than tax specialist)

I was in tax and left partly for that reason

like

Left as an S1, my situation is a little misleading since its a very particular role but jumped to controller position at a small ish company. Had just just got my CPA, and am in Canada

OP: the best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The second best time to plant a tree is today. That said, moving from audit to tax at S1 is not too bad. You will have a small step back but in the long run (5-10) years, you will glad you did that early on. You will need to get some support behind you to make the transition less bumpy. Good luck.

As a tax specialist I can tell you the planning work does not go to staff. It goes to partners and sometimes trickled down to managers. If you want planning you should chase something transactional like mergers/acquisitions/deal work where you’re advising the client on what decisions to make to optimize results. Most tax accountants don’t have access to that. You will need a strong base in the general corporate tax world in order to understand how planning works, so there will always be a learning curve. Just be prepared for that. Younguns are always so impatient with their career progression. Life is long. Just my 2 cents.

Do it. I switched from audit to tax. I asked before senior promotion and ended up staying staff 2 for an extra year. I’m a manager now.

I am having the same dilemma, glad to hear someone else made the switch! Now that you are a manager, have you been involved in much tax planning?

Staff 2 and also trying to switch to tax

I mean you may have to start over or as staff 2, in the grand scheme of your career losing a few years is nothing. Most people career change during their lives.

You are speaking my language
