It’s just a prompt to get you talking. They’re using your response as a way to gauge how you think and how you communicate, not the specific steps you take.

If you bring up the 4Cs then I need to you to prove to me you can actually think. Asking someone about their process is a good way to see if they’re introspective and can explain themselves at all. All the stuff you brought up is just dime a dozen strategy stuff. Same as what strat 1 said. Anyone can say that. What you laid out is mostly factfinding. You should think about how you know when your work is good, and work backwards from there. What stuff do you do that makes it so? That’s the answer. It’s not just saying “synthesis” - unpack how your brain works a bit more.

@SS2 - do you get interesting answers to this? I ask the same, but typically get pre-baked replies about minutiae of the month.

Best to think less about the specific question and more how you want to position yourself in their mind - a creative strategist will talk about how the real work often starts after the brief is done, helping craft the idea and feeding in insights. A comms strategist really knowing their way around media and behavior opps. Or you might be more upstream and really prefer growing pieces of business working more closely with clients to develop new briefs. In all cases back up with examples. The trick with interviews is to craft the message you are trying to land, or the three or so things you really want your audience to remember you for, and use the questions to make those points. And then to do it all in a way where if feels conversational and not rehearsed!

Try using an example story from the best time you did this rather than generalities and stay on point

I think a smart thing to say here, and a good practice in general, would be something about hypothesizing early on and then trying to disprove or validate through research and talking to people

I mean just have both. Be rigorous.

There are other processes/approaches too

Please elaborate SS1!

I ask this to see if the department values research and is willing to push clients to invest in it. Also how I’ll be expected to work with other departments. Some places actually have very strict frameworks they use for strategic thinking and briefing too. Others it’s different for every client.

The original question is the reverse - HR asking a strat what’s their process. But I also ask this of departments and hiring managers, and I actually very rarely get a straight answer. It shows how developed the department is.

I’m hiring now, and I’ve asked HR to use questions like this in screening because there’s a glut of people applying who don’t understand the basics and I want to make sure they have fundamentals before they come to me. Granted if I ask that question I want a more detailed answer but it’s about qualifying you either way.

Was up for a stretch role of a manager role as a senior analyst (almost cl9 promotion) but delivery lead says he doesn’t want to put me in the role as the client counterpart is male and I am female and he said due to the travel requirements it wouldn’t work…. Kinda mad if gender is the only thing holding me back from this role. Should I say something
