Additional Posts in Salaries in Tech
Hello, I have received an offer from Southwest Airlines as a Associate Technology Analyst with their direct college hire program. Will be graduating in May with a degree in MIS and also have internships experience as a Business Systems analyst intern. The salary compensation started off at 66,500 but was looking for the 75k range and they got back to me saying the best they can do is 68,500. They also have a 401k company match up to 9.3%. Do you think this is a solid offer for this job market?

Yes you’re underpaid even for Dallas, which is not as cheap as it used to be. I’d expect the 105-115K per year range you gave. That’s what they’re paying at capital one for 0 YOE
It’s definitely not as cheap as it used to be. Thanks for the feedback. 🖤
Although I do agree that the range you gave is reasonable, it really depends on who you work for. There are three tiers of companies imo when it comes to software pay - the top is obviously FAANG level.
The next are companies that pay pretty good base salaries but don’t really have a crazy big TC structure (stock/options, big bonuses, etc) like Capital One mentioned above. This is also standard defense/aerospace industry companies, although some might pay a bit more or less than others.
Then there is the third tier, which people on FishBowl don’t like to acknowledge for some reason but is where the vast majority of SWE’s work at. These are standard companies that don’t pay as well as the aforementioned two, with salaries often starting at 0 YOE / out of college with 40-50k/yr. Sort of like University/college SWE jobs.
If you work for at least 2, you absolutely should be making 100k. but if you’re at 3, you need to leave to make 100k because oftentimes you’ll see even Senior SWE’s there making 80k.
Yes underpaid. If they don’t bump you significantly, I’d look for external offers. Hone your skills. Find a niche that is in demand. I was in your boat at my last company, moved to Dell at a 100% salary increase. Literally doubled + LTI. Market is not as hot currently, but you can still find one if you have the skills they need. Good luck 👍🏼
Your negotiation should be simple and direct. If you are a valued staff engineer you simply point out your contributions and accomplishments to the company and then advise them that your ability and ambition needs to be competitively compensated. You are talking with other employers about your options to understand the market and opportunities that are available to you. Your not saying your leaving and your not telling them they must do anything, but if a better opportunity comes you will take advantage of the opportunity. Money is not the only thing they can give you. Say you see a great experience they could have you work on that would give you that next level experience and boost your value. That could be what would be the best for you long term. Think about your career path and where you want to be. Also your new in your career. Management might look great but I would work as an IC longer to learn more before I looked to manage others. Good Luck

Yep underpaid but not 110/120. I think you could command 90-95
+1 to this
Also being from Dallas, 90-95k is a good target for 2 YOE.
If you want 100+ you could look at remote jobs that are willing to compensate higher irrespective of location.
I’d say you’re underpaid but I don’t know I agree that you’d be at ~110. I’d think 90s would be more in line with par. This is dependent on how much impact you’re having, the technologies, replaceability, etc
Just chiming in to say I also agree you are way underpaid. Shoot for 90k within the next year, and if you get more that's great. Lots of factors impact whether they can pay over 100k (industry, etc) but you should not be under 80k

76k salary and what TC?
100k tc is the very low end for entry level (0 YOE) so 2 YOE you deserve to be getting 150k+ TC
76k is the total comp. No stocks/bonuses.
I’d say you’re unpaid, you have to have a negotiation with your manager.
