I'm a solid software engineer; I get the job done, I'm reliable, I work hard, i can accomplish almost any technical task with enough time, I'm supposed to be smart; I went to MIT.

But I am in awe of those 10x programmer types, because -- as the name would imply-- they finish everything 10x faster than me. I don't understand how they do it, and I am super envious. I want to be like these guys. But how? Is it even learnable or is it all just God-given talent? How can I become like them?

Can’t speak to development specifically…but I can say that there will always be people who are smarter, more talented, and harder working. This isn’t a reflection on you, but rather the vastness and variety of life.

If you are compelled to experience this type of mastery, why not carve out a smaller niche for yourself?

For example, specialize in solutions for a particular industry AND technology stack AND be good at talking to executives AND in your geography (just as an example).
Find the intersections and you can narrow your field and competition.

like

Thus is really good advice. I used to work in a very narrow niche and was basically the go to data scientist for a particular class of problems. I hated those problems so I left, but it did make you valuable

You're thinking of it too narrowly - 10x isn't about doing the same thing 10 times faster but being able to think of innovative/novel solutions.

like

First, +1 to G2, I agree with them.

You don’t invent tech in a vaccum. Angular solved a problem that jquery wasn’t good at, react was a different and less opinionated version of angular and vue is a simpler angular. Svelte solves the entire problem differently. Are you in a place where you’re hitting react’s limits? If you’re not, you might not be at the place to create react.

Being the one handing out tickets now, I can confidently say being able to do the work well (and without hand holding) is super valuable. Speed isn't everything.

like

Where do you work? Imo most 10x folks are a function if understanding the toolchain+ code base + context better. There’s is some innate talent ofc (some can code faster, others can come up with novel solutions to old problems..)

I just don’t let others’ skill bother me. It did at some point but it no longer does.

like

Yeah I'm the same, I used to get all worked up that others were better/faster/smarter than me and feel bad about it...now I'm just like whatever, I'm doing my thing and making money so happy with that

Read So Good The Can't Ignore You by Cal Newport.

He talks about the idea of how experts live close to what he calls "the adjacent possible" and how "deliberate practice" is more powerful than hours sunk into something.

I don't personally believe anyone is 10X better than someone else if they've put in the same amount of deliberate practice.

The reasons you can't see how they can do things is because your level of knowledge isn't at their level. Knowing something in and out, backwards and forwards, and pushing on the boundaries of what's possible is totally different than just being able to use a technology well.

like

Everyone works differently. I wouldn't stress about it.

like

Don't eat, sleep, drink or give yourself a chance to take a break until you 10x like they do. Most of those folks have innate talents but at the end of the day, it's all the same principles and skillsets. They just know how to apply it faster, probably because of experience and practice. Maybe in a high intensity environment like a startup or something. You can get there to if you apply yourself!

like

First off, I'm not an engineer so don't know if the same term applies. Secondly, I did not go to a traditional collage. However, I was called a 10x'r by our CEO and didn't understand it, thus diving into a bit of research. For me, I just have a ton of work experience so I'm able to connect ideas quickly while also able to express those ideas easily to my teammates.

On the the flip side, I've worked with some amazingly brilliant engineers that just can't see the company vision, can't move people toward a goal, and only do what they are told to do.

I don't think 10x'r is a statement on speed, but on value. There's more value in asking the right questions so that we can code quicker. There's more value in getting a team on board with a pivot, or being able to express strategy in ways that can be easily adopted.

My husbands brother got married this summer. It was a destination wedding and we forked over a lot to be there. We also gave them 1k in cash as a gift of which I paid half. The bride didn’t bother to spend two mins with me at the wedding (husbands bro did),neither sent a thank you text for coming or for the gift. My husband said to just let it go but I’m salty about it. To me, it’s a lack of basic courtesy. I just need to let it go because what can I really do about it but it’s eating away at me

Can another tell me how the solution owner role in Slalom works? It seems to cover product owner and scrum master and PM concepts.. all good but sounds like too much work for one individual.

Do they hire a solution owner to run the ceremonies / write stories and be part of the scrum team and a principal solution owner to do more of the product roadmap / client facing PM work? Have interview and trying to understand the scrum team structure and the role of the SO in particular..

My title was software project manager but my actual work is something like: 20% project management; 80% product owner/ scrum master in several teams in my previous job. Was this common? I felt like I can’t focus if I need to wear multiple hats and all teams were depending on me. Being the only female in a software engineering department with 15+ male colleagues I feel sometimes quite lonely. Willing to join a firm and build a diversify and inclusive team
