i would say you could probably make more but the flexibility that you have to be with your kids is priceless. As they get bigger, you can search for other opportunities
i would think really hard about this precious time and enjoy it. You can always interview and see what comes up but If things are good, I would stay put. Either way, it will work out!
When COVID hit I passed up a job that would have paid me $40k more, which would have been a huge raise for me. BUT, I would have to commute downtown (strike 1) and pay for daycare (strike 2) and probably buy a new wardrobe (strike 3). I decided on a job that paid $10,000 more but allows me to work at home, only pay for afterschool care, and wear my old jeans and t shirts. I feel rich. Daycare costs 2,000 monthly which is 24k after tax which means I'd have to gross over 30k just to pay for daycare. You make over six figures and get to work at home! You'd have to make 150k + to NOT work at home. Enjoy it.
"I feel rich." Love this so much. 😊
Compensation isn't solely measured in dollars and cents. Sounds like you've got a ton of flexibility with the time you get to spend with your children, which (IMO) isn't something you can put a price tag on. And I'd say $107k is a decent living. Could you get more? Probably. But think about what you'd be giving up and ask yourself if a bigger bank account would be worth it.
While you’re enjoying the bonding time with your kiddo(s), enjoy it. I was SAHD for our son from 3mo to 1.5y, and then I quit enjoying it and went back to work (not at Amazon - you can’t work at Amazon with young kids unless you have a full-time SAHP) and I wouldn’t trade that year for anything.
Put a dollar value on working from home and watching your kids. If this job is working out for you then you're lucky. You have to consider that because you can work from home it free up time and responsibilities for your wife's career.
And on top of the other great feedback, when we start new jobs they often require harder work the first year to get ramped up. I stayed in my last job too long so I could get through most of grad school.
How much more could you make? Compare the delta with what you make now. Then compare that to the cost of childcare. Then compare if the savings (if any) is worth it. Overall sounds like you have a great set up where you can work but also be with your children.
A lot depends on your location still, though with COVID and 100% remote jobs that is evening up somewhat. If you live anywhere but the coasts, you are probably doing OK at $107k, at least for now. SF, LA or NY, you are in a world of hurt unless spouse is pulling down big bucks.
Network Engineers typically top out around ~150kish even at huge companies/ best situations. As other have said, for the flexibility you're doing fine. Depending on where you live, 43k isn't a huge jump after taxes.
