I’m a TC II so a little over a year into my career here. And everyday I think about quitting or possibly being fired. My dream is to open up a custom cookie and cake business. Has anyone done something like that? Opened a bakery? Or even had a small side business going? Should I just jump the Tax ship and start a bakery?!??

Ok so I love your energy and I too LOVE to bake! however this is a massive undertaking so please, please do not quit your job yet lol. where I live they have something called a "cottage license" - this allows you to sell baked goods that are made and packaged in your kitchen. IMO start doing this as a side hustle and see where it goes.

Side note: I’m a whole lot better at frosting cookies than I am at completing tax returns 🥴

Maybe try being a vendor at a local farmers market and get customer feedback. It will also help you streamline your operation.

I know its tempting, but I'd try to keep your current job and start your bakery as a side biz until it becomes profitable. It will be a lot less stressful for you and allow you more funds to invest in your business.

It is a good option! I'm still exploring multiple options before quitting my job, but it definitely is on my list. I have done some independent work, and I like it so far. I think you should go for it. Maybe try reading "The Lean Startup," which will show you how to test your ideas before going all in.

I’m doing the same thing right now! I love to bake and since the job is so boring I’ve been spending my days refining the recipes and setting up a business plan. I’d be excited to learn more about your journey. I think you should start as a side business!

I'm excited for you guys to go on this journey as someone who loves consuming baked goods hahah

At least 2 of our accountants have small side hustles for baking businesses. We pay them to bake for our various office events, coworkers buy for their various personal events. Not like we are their only customers of course.

I’ve seen a lot of small startup bakeries try to open retail brick locations and they’ve all failed very quickly. It’s a very tough business to make a living in.

(Although I knew a specialist who focused on salsa or something, all their tax docs always smelled of garlics, and after many years of building out of their kitchen they did eventually expand to retail. However only after they were making pretty good living working 100% from home)

Hi! I bake during weekends or whenever I have time. I sell cookies to my co-workers for extra income. You can start from there.

Anyone else notice a trend with the mass amounts of layoffs in tech? Why are all their resumes so jumpy? Not like 2-5 years jumpy, like few months at a time jumpy? But still can land a position with similar tech giants? IMO, lots of these people get hired by their rich friends, stay a few months before someone realized they aren’t qualified and were just a recommendation from a current employee. Then repeat that process over and over until your company is down 50%

I keep reading that JDs are valued in compliance but am wondering if a different graduate program is better for my goals. I already plan to obtain the CAMS certification. Thank you!

Looking for thoughts and opinions about HR involvement in employee promotions. More specifically passing up an experienced employee for not having a college degree. We have an employee in our office, who applied for a promotion and despite having a degree, would be a perfect fit. Several supervisors recommended this employee for the position but HR denied the promotion for lack of a degree. I have a graduate degree and I still feel that experience is sometimes more valuable. Thoughts?

Has anyone been laid off from a Big Law firm and invited to apply back at a later date and actually got hired back. In my discussion with HR when they told me I was getting laid off I asked if there was a way they could move to another practice group..she told me there was nothing open at the moment but I can apply when something opens up.
Was she just being nice or do I actually have a shot?
