I'm a third year associate working at a smallish firm, thinking about going solo. Currently in defence litigation but I've wanted to do estate planning and tax law since law school but haven't had any opportunities pop up in my area. Any advice on starting solo in either estate planning or tax? (Note: I don't have an llm)

Carved out a practice out of law school for estate advice and financial privacy.

My advice in this and all professional services is get half of the fees up front. My extra advice to you is include ways out of your retainer agreement for clients you want to fire.

My wife did that very thing. She was a defense lawyer for about 8 years then spent a full year studying and doing tons of CLE on estate work. Then started slow and worked for a boutique for a bit. Now has her own busy practice. I get that not everyone has the ability to do this model, but just FYI. Many local bar associations have interest groups around this practice as a source for advice and networking.

I generally enjoy my job as an external auditor on large public clients. This includes controls testing. I’m looking into internal audit roles in hopes of similar work stream, just less of it and more focus on improving specific areas. Would this be a wise move? PA into IA. I’m hoping there’s still some room for flexibility and less busy season hours.

1 year into being in my firm’s benefit plan team. I am really starting to dislike it. I feel like every plan is like deja vu. Same testing, same controls to corroborate, exact same workpapers, it’s driving me crazy. I would prefer to switch over to doing FS audits with our commercial audit team to maximize my exit opportunities if I choose to leave in the future. I know I need to bring this up to my coach, but I don’t even know how to start this conversation. Any insight/tips?

Suppose you agree that the provided professional development offered through our districts is ineffective. Why not invest in your professional development by seeking a coach or mentor or even pay for professional resources that would help? To put it plainly, why don't we educators invest in our professional development?

This past Wednesday (the 24th), was 3 years of sobriety for me.

In 15 years of weekend binge/blackout drinking, NEVER had I gone more than 3 weeks without a drink (typically never more than 1 weekend without a drink), and now my sobriety is counted in years (though still one day at a time).

I am beyond grateful and I know that this is something I could never do on my own.

401k loan for first house. Taking $20k to go towards down payment and closing costs. Option 1 is a “personal loan” with up to 72 month payback. Option 2 is “home loan” up to 30 years. With the monthly payments, I lean towards Option 1. Any cons to this other than it impacting my DTI when they see these debt payments on bank statements for mortgage pre-approval? I plan on having the loan sit in savings to “season” for a few months. Does this make sense? I appreciate insight! ☺️

Been practicing complex lit (employment and consumer class/representative actions) on the plaintiff side for last 6 years of my 7 year career. Just accepted a defense side offer, with a billable requirement/initial bonus eligibility of 1750 hours. I know billing is different on the defense side than simply recording hours toward a lodestar on the plaintiff side. How many "real" total hours is 1750 billable hours? I know it's supposed to be relatively low, but not sure what it really means?

I’m new to the world of billable hours. I like to keep organized, so I do spend a small bit of time making/updating case lists and contact sheets to make sure I have record of last contact with client/OC, where I am in suit, relevant deadlines, etc. Do you bill for this kind of work?
