I’m a WOC, when I first started there was no one to mentor me. I won a few scholarships and got into ad school, when I started at my first agency I was told to ask a writer, who happened to be ...

Be the mentor you wanted. Fuck those assholes!

likeupliftinghelpful

I’m sorry this happened to you. Just know there are mentors out there who would have handled ‘tough’ with ‘tough love.' - you just didn’t get any so move on.

Be the future mentor you want to be.

Consider not generalizing anyone, be it straight white males or millenials . This only adds to the toxicity that’s prevalent in today’s workplace.

(Btw, karma and schadenfreude are close cousins...)

You’re a leader now. It was hard getting there but now it’s your turn. Lead the way you always wanted to be led.

My two cents.

“Entitled millennials?” Have we learned nothing about judging people? And does karma mean treating people how you were treated? Confused by your post.

likesmart

Expecting respect in a professional workplace is super entitled. Damn millennials.

likeuplifting

A straight white man, to look at my script and give me feedback, he took my script, didn’t look at it, and ripped it up. No advice. Nothing. Just entitlement and his power trip. I was told to ask another man, the only people were straight white men at my office, he barely made eye contact and said “I don’t know why don’t you write a script that doesn’t suck?” I kept writing. I got better. I got here. This week I was asked to mentor a few people, part of me wonders what if I treated them this way too? How would they react? I don’t know if the entitled millennials of nowadays could take it. Moreso I don’t think I’d be able to get away with this type of behavior the way the men did...it makes me wonder if karma truly exists in this industry. End of confession.

likefunny

You wonder if millennials could take it or would take it? No one should take that shit. You worked with some straight up terrible people. I’m glad things are changing and these horror stories are becoming a thing of the past

likefunny

@acd3 As far as saying, “I’m out of here I’m not taking this shit” guess what? No agency would’ve NOT been like that 10-14+ years ago. There’s your entitlement showing right there. I’d have been out of a job, money, and had to move back home. Instead of complaining, I did my work and moved myself ahead. I produced tv spots despite not being given partners. I stayed late. I’d also like to say this is the confessions category and this is my confession. I’m allowed to be human and have mine.

like

The second you said “entitled millennials” you lost me. Don’t complain about how you were judged and then judge others. You are part of the problem.

Good on you for being a WOC creative director. Few and far between. So you got the good karma.

My entitlement?! I come from a third world country and worked my ass off to be where I am. And I was agreeing with you so really don’t get why you’re attacking me.

like

Yooo OP you’re kind of attacking everyone rn when people are trying to share their honest opinions. You did post asking for others opinions...didn’t you?

like

After reading this thread, I’ve come to the conclusion that OP hasn’t figured out how to constructively handle feedback yet.

I’m not a millennial and I think that jab stuck out like a sore thumb in an otherwise interesting post. Please stop lumping groups of people together and feeding a stereotype. Most people in the industry have dealt with jerks and continue to do so today. If you’re going to be a mentor, you need to put the bitterness behind you and be the mentor you always wanted.

Remember, the generation before you probably felt the same way about you as you do about millennials. Stop the cycle.

Making this all about you @acd/. Thanks for proving my point.

@CW2 - their vitriol didn’t help. What does help is being in the room with other writers that have much better game & years of experience. Immersion. I tried to soak in that energy as much as I could. There were two freelance writers that came in that melted away the competition with one quip. The bro dudes would make fun of them but those guys didn’t care, they made their 2k a day and left everyone in the dust. A great lesson in true talent ultimately wins over petty politics. Criticism is a wonderful thing but again there has to be some specific feedback in it, you know? The worst thing a CD can do is say idunno and then just stare off. A strong one will say, “You have 100 lines here, all of them bore me, but see what you just rattled off while talking to me? There’s something interesting in that. Go in that direction and focus on using X to sell it.”

like

There’s another confession then @consultant1 - I said entitled millennials. Consider it a bonus confession. Sorry I lost you, why don’t you consult me on how I’ll lose my millennial audience or how your job has no meaning especially on dates. Boo hoo.

likefunny

So happy I don’t work with you, OP. It sounds like you treasure your bad experiences and think anyone who hasn’t had the exact same shitty experiences as you is entitled/had it handed to them. Yes, you’ve endured a lot to get where you are, but it’s also turned you in to a jerk

like

@OP
Serious question: did their vitriolic feedback help you or put a burning desire in you to prove them wrong? I’m not saying what they did was right, we all know it was cruel, but did they make you become a better writer?

Hello Fishes!

I’ve an offer from an established company trying to create a new data science team for their business. I know that I’m going to be one of the individual contributors in the team for the work we’ll be doing.

I’ve been undervalued by last company(10 LPA) and this new company is giving me 14 LPA (in hand). I’m not too happy with the pay. But the opportunity for learning and growth looks good to me. I’ll be a deputy manager after being a SW engg.

Do I still look for better offer?
