I’m a woman, 6th yr and I’ve always found it hard to explain or discuss anything orally and doing presentations for clients is a nightmare (I do well it just takes a lot of energy). Even in school oral reports scared the hell out of me and required massive preparation. So I’ve always considered “articulate” as a compliment. I recently learned that it’s not? Now I’m wondering how much praise I’ve given students, juniors, colleagues using “articulate”

It’s a compliment, don’t overthink it.

Whew okay! I mean it seemed like those comments were sincerely just giving good feedback on my performance so I couldn’t understand too when I hear people getting offended at being told they were articulate

like

I think when it’s said with an implication of surprise that the person is articulate, it is a compliment, but speaks to assumptions the person may have made about you before hearing you speak (which undercuts the compliment). Those assumptions may be based on race or other characteristics that have bearing on a person’s ability to speak, but persist nonetheless.

likesmarthelpful

Realizing I have a typo - it should be “have *no* bearing”, but I think (hope) that was apparent from my sentiment.

A little surprised every other comment is apparently unaware of this prototypical micro aggression.

Yeah I think of articulate as a compliment too

like

I don’t get why it’s not a compliment

like

Me too! I was always glad to receive feedback about being articulate or eloquent after giving presentations since I worry about coming across as nervous and not knowing the subject

like

I have always thought it a compliment too. What is the rationale for it not being a compliment?

Asian (3rd generation), just said as feedback or compliment after doing well in presentations

“Articulate” is a great compliment, especially if you’re a litigator.

No idea how articulate isn’t a compliment. If I told someone they are articulate it means they can express themselves in an understandable and succinct way.

like

Articulate is absolutely a compliment unless someone is saying it so it sounds like, "you're articulate for a ____," but who's saying shit like that these days?

like

Random question did you have a speech impediment or anything when you were younger? I did and I always think I am speaking jibberish but I am not. Hard on confidence.

like

No, I’m just shy and don’t like speaking in public, I get really nervous

like

Who is the numbnuts that said it wasn't. I have never been called articulate, but I'd def take it as a compliment.

Hello there! I currently work in billing at a medical office. I got my Bachelors in Psychology a few years ago but I couldn’t find a position that seemed like a good option for me that was well paying and fulfilling. I tried working as a tech at an Applied Behavior Analysis clinic but it wasn’t a good fit. I’m hesitant to try case management or social work because I worry I won’t like it but I want to use my degree in Psychology. Does anyone have any ideas for me?

Does anyone have any tips for staying focused enough to bill consistently every day? It seems that I’m only able to bill the requisite 8-10 hours daily when I’m overwhelmed, not when I have a decent amount of work to do but no pressing deadlines. I made my hours last year but it’s been an absolute struggle trying to stay on track. I’m already down 170 hours from where I need to be at this point and unless I get my shit together, there’s no way I can hit hours. Ugh.
