I’m a copywriter writing for product design and while I 100% agree with above advice, read UX writing and content strategy books. Writing for product and user experience is not the same as ad copywriting (both are very valuable though)
A couple books:
Nicely Said
Technically Wrong
And then check out Medium for user generated articles. They’re more about trends and stuff but helpful. But you’ll find a lot there. Copy takes time to learn, just like design.
Hey Whipple Squeeze This is the definitive guide to copywriting (and a pretty fun read). If you DM me I can send you a PDF.
The Copy Book is fun too!
By any chance can I DM you for a pdf? I’m a copywriter at the creative circus, and I could send you some CA annual PDFs too
Buy D&AD’s ‘The Copy Book’, it will become your bible. I still believe that many of the copywriting principles laid out by David Ogilvy hold true
All of that is great advice but the bigger question is - do you want to be writing copy or do you want to be able to focus on designing? Granted we're not rocket scientists but it's not something you get good at without work and effort and that will take you away from the job you actually got hired for.
Why not ask them to, for the sake of your efficiency, hire a writer, freelance or otherwise.
+1 for Hey Whipple! Rereading now for the third time
Everybody Writes by Ann Handley
I write copy for the website(ux/content). Ads(banner ads, digital ads). Content marketing(instagram). Any bits of knowledge would be appreciated! Just curious!
