Use chats as an informal way of checking in. It’s the new dropping by desks.

Schedule video calls with individual teams to get a better gauge on their chemistry and don’t be shy in asking what they like and don’t like about their current situation.

Virtual happy hours are super awkward. But if they’re down for it, see if the agency will reimburse you for sending drinks their way in time for the call.

Virtual pizza parties are better. Even if it’s Dominos.

Use google docs and work through ideas with them live. Helps make things run more smoothly.

Have full team check-ins on Zoom once a week just to make sure everyone is in a good head space and clear on where things are going. Cameras on.

Fantasy football is too far in and not everyone is a fan, but find someway to create camaraderie. Film/book/podcast club or trivia competitions help get creative juices flowing and help team bonding (if the team isn’t full of cynics).

Also schedule calls. If your company operates on Teams, unexpected calls kinda get people’s nerves a little wound up.

Go slow when you first get there. I’m sure the team might be feeling just as weird about it all. They’re not used to being managed remotely just as you aren’t used to managing remotely.

This isn’t advice based on experience, but just a thought - maybe try to get to know your team as people, not just employees. Also, good luck to you. Sounds like a really big challenge.

My manager has weekly video catch ups with each person on our team. Helps us connect on a personal level, chat about current projects, and raise any issues that may have come up. Weekly is a bit often, especially if your team is big, but if you can schedule 1 on 1 chats every couple weeks or monthly, it’ll prob help build your connections.

How does brand strategy work at your agency? Do you have account planners? Do you find them valuable? What do they bring you?

At my agency some believe that the only strategists who belong on staff are business strategists. How can this funnel drive more revenue? And that communication strategy, the insights that drive the creative brief, should be figured out by the CD and account person.

Maybe I have an overly optimistic view of what planners do, but I feel like something is missing here.

Hello creative directors. Today I learned about a situation at a well-known agency. A very senior account executive changed creative work in a deck, and that led to the work not selling. The creatives learned about it in the preso. What would you do in the situation? Would you go up against somebody way above you on the ladder?
