My experience is your group will often dictate the hotel preferences so just ask. Also, get someone to refer you to a rewards program because both they and you get bonus points for a referral (good way to win some brownie points with another staff or senior). For airlines, figure out what airlines have a hub at your airport (for example I used to be based in Chicago which was a United hub and so I tried to fly United as much as possible. Atlanta is a delta hub, Dallas is American, etc.). Pwc also has some fast track programs to get you earlier status with airlines
You should be enrolled in every major loyalty program. Personally I prioritize Delta and Bonvoy to the extent I can. Delta is hands down the best inflight product (but skymiles are called skypesos for a reason). Marriott has the best geographic coverage - especially if you’re frequently stuck traveling to non major urban centers.
Get a chase sapphire reserve or Amex platinum and you’ll get status almost everywhere
For airlines, I think the best determining factor is are you close to an airlines hub and is there a certain place you’ll travel to the most. If you are then that airline will have more flights to your home and you’ll more likely than not choose that airline. Same with direct flights to your final destination For example, I live in the south where the closest hubs are Dallas and Chicago from both directions. American Airlines made the most sense for me and where I travel.
^ gold status for Marriott and Hilton comes with Amex platinum
Car programs are usually a joke, but often you can avoid waiting in line. Most people just Uber though.
CSR and platinum Amex are both great cards but neither gives you status anywhere. Delta lounge access is a clutch plat Amex benefit though.
The only card I’m aware of that gives you automatic status is the centurion/Amex black card - but good luck getting an invite (need to be spending 250k+ per year on another Amex card to even be considered for an invite and then you’re looking at 7.5k initiation fee
My Amex plat gives me gold at SPG, Hilton, Hertz, and Exec at Enterprise on top of the Delta lounges, Priority Pass lounges, and Centurion lounges.
