I’m about to turn down a 25% raise from a competing agency because my company just gave me a promotion (7% raise) because I like my leadership team... am I stupid?

Potentially unpopular opinion, but: No, Not if you feel like you’re paid appropriately, feel supported and like you have opportunities for growth and learning, are respected, and like your team, role and known path forward. The grass isn’t always greener elsewhere; it can be different, but that isn’t always necessarily better. Certain aspects may be, but there’s always a give and take. As long as your needs are being met and you feel like you’re in a good spot, then trust your gut to do what’s right for you.

If the competitor approached you, no. If you reached out to them, then something must be lacking at your current agency and a 7% raise probably won’t fix it.

You could always tell your agency you’ve received another offer elsewhere for way more money and see if that 7% can increase

Don’t heed the advice on this thread. It’ll be treated like a counter offer. And that NEVER ends well. Stick with your gut OP.

I took a 12.5% cut just so I could enjoy the work, my coworkers and leadership. So if you’re stupid, then so am I. I’m happy though. Crazy, right?

You're not stupid. You're making progress with bosses who trust you. That will open new opportunities and enable you to make more impact in your company. If you like your leaders then you'll probably be happier as well. All of this will build your career and preserve your well-being. That could be as important to your long-term success as much as maximizing your immediate paycheck.

Not necessarily. There's significant value in liking what you do every weekday, your team, low stress, job security, etc.

not at all. ur new title might bring u farther somewhere else and more $$ in the long run

Every situation is different but totally agree with VP 1 and AD 1. If you went looking for the offer then there is something you don’t like about your current situation. If you truly like your current situation then you will find yourself motivated to work smart to eventually get an even higher promotion and raise in the future. If you went to get the offer to see if your current agency will match, then you will have a target on your back. Counter offers almost never work out in the end. But if you are chasing money then the grass is not always greener. Because the money will not matter to you if you end up in a miserable or regrettable situation. Nothing is more deflating and demotivating. Trust me I went through this once. As a few people said here, go with your gut. Feel fortunate you are in a good situation bc many are not. You will naturally find yourself motivated, working hard and smart and eventually the money and promotion will come. I guarantee that it will not feel so far away. Because when you are happy to work each day despite how busy you are, the time will fly by and before you know it, the raise and promotion is there.

Nope. It isnt always about money and frankly had I found a team I liked I wouldn’t leave. Peace of mind, being appreciated, synergy and a place where you can learn is where it’s at.
