I’m accepting a job offer tomorrow, and the new company has 5 less PTO days per year than my current company, and it’s prorated based on my start date. Oof, I hadn’t thought of that. Possibly! I’d love to have my cake and eat it, too. But, this could be an alternative solution. 😅

Also see if they have any floating holidays, some companies give FMLA you could leverage that. Last option they will certainly let you take leave without pay for short duration our company allows leave of absence of 30 days or more for any reason

Yes. In consulting i discovered that if you can make your holiday extend existing holidays (like summer) so they arent missing you on a project they really didnt care how much holiday i took. I usually had mine planned ahead and before taking any projects i would flag it to make sure the project could accommodate it. Otherwise i said no and took another project. I also flagged any planned holiday before signing. For the startup i just make sure to flag it in the shared calendar and make sure the team can plan around it. I discovered that the pressure i felt to not take holiday was mostly myself. If i firmly told staffing or my manager that i was going on holiday it was not a problem. I only experienced pushback once on a planned holiday, and i could have said no but my insecure overachiever kicked in 🙄. Which in hindsight was a mistake.

Trying to figure out holidays with extended family. My husband and I have young kids on the east coast. His sister and her husband live on the opposite coast. We have lived in the same city as my in-laws for the last 10 years, so it always made sense for my sister-in-law to fly back here to visit. Now in-laws are in Chicago. Does it make sense to ask everyone to come to us for holidays given that we have young kids and limited vacation time? Is that fair?

Does anyone have regular flings? How do you keep it discreet? I love my partner but he’s not that into sex and it’s frankly not that great because he’s gained a lot of weight and doesn’t want to change his diet or exercise. I don’t want him to feel bad about his appearance. I love him regardless. But ever since I went on a vacation with friends and ended up having a hot make out session in a bathroom with some guy, I can’t stop thinking about it. I thought I feel guilty but I just want more.

Almost all the high holidays fall out on the weekend this year! Might be the first time I’ll have rollover PTO!

How do you go about using PTO outside of an actual vacation? Because of the tight knit nature of the teams I’m on it feels like I can’t use an actual off day when I need it. (Corporate/M&A for reference)

I put my 2 weeks in and I literally have no billable work right now. Are they watching my billables? Can I just chalk this up as part of my "unlimited" vacation time? I'm available if needed, but also working remote, so could get away with doing bare minimum, I think.

I need help. I'm dealing with multiple losses in the same week and having a hard time... I took some time off from work but I have no motivation to do anything. I don't want to go back to work and don't care about my work right now. I want to quit but I don't want to make a rash decision but need a long break. It's also not fair to my team that I can't give it my 100%. What can I do?

Hi, so I’ve been working as a (TCP temporary creative professional) while one of the agency’s employees was on leave. I understood it to be a FT position, clocking in, etc but last week a bunch of employees were on vacation and I didn’t get projects. My work from the week before was all approved, so I had no edits. I asked for work, reached out, etc but ended up with very few billable hours, which annoyed the bosses. Now I’m not sure how to proceed. Do I NGAF, clock in? Or wait for work?

My school has seen combinations of f2f, hybrid, and remote teaching/learning throughout the first half of the school year. After the MLK holiday, our district is returning to traditional f2f teaching 100%. I have 4 band classes (1 beginning, 2 intermediate, & 1 advanced), and as far as content pacing is concerned, we’re 1 9-week grading period behind. Is it a far fetched goal to get my students where they need to be by the end of the school year? How would you handle a situation like this?

Considering a move to NTT Data in a healthcare consulting role. Mixed reviews in the bowls. Major concerns are bench policy, staff aug roles, 2 week PTO, and high turnover due to job dissatisfaction. Recruiter and mgr had great things to say around growth and opportunity, which doesn’t align with feedback from the bowls or Glassdoor. Understanding things have changed there in the last few months, I need un-biased advice from fellow fish who have recently joined or can speak to recent changes

Would you go on an international vacation shortly after a frozen embryo transfer (5-10 days after)? It is looking like my first transfer opportunity will be shortly before a trip I already have planned. I’d rather not wait, and the one time I have been pregnant before I implanted on a international vacation but I don’t know if this is a stupid thing to do? I have a very stressful job so maybe it would be good to be away from work?? Curious what others think.

I feel like every company lies about “working your way up.” You’re never allowed to blatantly say that you don’t like your position and you’d like to transition to HR or Finance. It’s almost as if once you get in claims, you’re stuck. If you’re a manager and you see an employee that wants to branch out into a different department, why would you keep them boxed in for 2+ years? Are there some background mechanics that I’m missing?

Why are law firms utterly uninterested in seeking or receiving feedback from associates about how the firm (doesn’t) functions or is(n’t well) managed? Why is it always an exclusively one way street with the evaluations? Even when the firm is hemorrhaging lawyers. I mean this in all seriousness. I don’t get it. Of course, management doesn’t have to agree with all or even most of what the associates may say, but some insights could really strengthen the firm, and even make it more profitable.
