I’m all for sleeveless outfit (as long as not overly revealing) is acceptable for women in non-client facing video calls but interestingly I’ve never seen any man going sleeveless in front of the camera (myself included). Are guys just less comfortable in this situation (again, same situation as girls - internal calls, working from home, and working out or doing house chores in between meetings... etc)? How do you feel when you see your guy coworkers in sleeveless outfits?

I mean, plenty of women's blouses (i.e. otherwise professional shirts) are sleeveless, whereas I have never seen a men's professional shirt that was sleeveless. Men's sleeveless shirts do tend to be more revealing than women's sleeveless blouses as well.

I think it's *more* professional to cover shoulders, but it's fine for a casual call, provided it's not a super revealing tank top or anything.

Hahaha I stand corrected

Someone please wear this

I think mostly because men’s clothing is way less likely to come sleeveless? I can have a blouse that is professional and sleeveless or a dress but when I think of male clothing that is sleeveless I can only think of wife beaters or cut off t shirts

SM1 You don't know what I like hahaha ;D

I'd do it, but I think women being topless is still more frowned upon than men being topless.

Omg,that does not answer it. What is wrong with hair! Where did the diversity champions go ? People with and without armpit hairs all contribute to diversity.

Um guys get ur guns out. I wanna see 💪.. But honestly, female professional clothing + casual clothing are sleeveless. Men don't have a professional sleeveless alternative.. so I'm thinking that's the reason.

like

Cuts both ways: Sleeveless for men is generally too casual vs. socially accepted as part of professional attire for women.

Just like going topless is accepted as casual for men but for women that becomes a major life/ career choice. 😅

I absolutely detest dress codes for either gender. I am all for piercings, tattoos in visible places, shorts, skirts, sandals, sleeveless tops, graphic tees, etc. And I say this as a person who dresses very non-descript and boring in the office, with no tattoos/piercings myself. People need to stop worrying about superficial things that don't affect others.

like

Loved coming across this comment and responses when I searched “tattoos.” I love my tattoos and wish I felt more comfortable having pink hair at the office (hooray for WFH). Glad to see a little support! 😉🥰

As a guy, I own 2 sleeveless shirts, both basketball jerseys. So based on me as a sample, it’s probably because guys generally wear t shirts instead

like

The answer is men have a safe choice they can wear every day and be sure they won’t be judged poorly. It’s called a button down and we can wear them every time without having to think about it. Women have all these different things they have to consider, such a large variety.

I’d prefer to be a guy on this one, button down on and I’m done

I am thinking in a few months zoom can overlay digital button down shirt on our bodies.

I swear I just felt my eyes roll back. Your male privilege is showing. Seriously, go shopping for some women’s professional wear. See how many pieces are sleeveless nowadays.

This thread is so full of misogyny it’s painful

like

I don't think I've ever seen a sleeveless men's shirt that wasn't super casual. Women's clothes have a lot of professional, sleeveless options. I regularly wear sleeveless blouses and dresses for work and I really wouldn't hesitate to wear one for any situation that wouldn't require a jacket (like a hearing or an interview). But I wouldn't take a work video call in athletic attire and I would expect the same of my colleagues.

like

Understand that we are trying to question the fundamentals of what is considered “professional”?

OMG Americans dress so horribly, this thread is a perfect example. I come from European heritage and upbringing and I would not wear a sleeveless shirt anywhere ever. Surely I will get hate for this response, just calling it as I see it. Call me a fashion snob but I think shorts, sandals and tanks should all be burned—only exception is if you are going to the beach. That’s it.

Manager2, this is like saying my religion is the best and all others should be abolished. What a nutcase.

At first we tried to keep up appearances... but by the end of May both my team and our clients had transitioned to wearing t-shirts on calls. It's nice.

There keeps being weird stuff about how people dress, man vs woman, as posts yesterday and today. Are you all the same person or different people trying to prove different points?

Yesterday, one of them was the boxers post.

Anyone who knows what I’m talking about, please let me know what you think.

Don’t worry. With any luck, the sheer volume of comments it received means that it will end up on the weekly digest, where a fresh wave of people will show up and blast it some more.

I am not particularly fond of it. I think it isn’t professional. I am ok with business casual but no shoulders. Maybe old fashion.

like

Men can not wear shorts but women can wear skirts? Men can not wear open toed footwear but many many women wear it!

like

You’re aware that shorts and skirts aren’t actually the same, right? Shorts aren’t considered professionally appropriate for women, either.

Men can wear a sleeveless shirt and skirt if they want to and women can wear a shirt and tie. Who says they can’t?

This question might anger some, but not meant to be provoking. Does anyone else feel that half the jobs in tech (scrum master, project manager, product manager, etc.) are more hindering than helpful? I feel like productivity would sky rocket if we didn’t have 10+ hours a week added of admin work/agile ceremonies/status meetings, and you just let developers and analysts do their job. Why are we spending hours learning how to estimate story points (for example) rather than improving production?
