I’m an 8th year and don’t expect to be put up for another year (maybe 2). I’ve been told that the reality is there may not be room at the partner level for my particular specialty (too many other partners doing what I do). I have a lateral opportunity to partnership in an undeveloped group or an in house AGC position with an exciting team. I also really like my current group and while I wouldn’t necessarily make partner, I feel confident I have many more years of job security. What do I do?

Junior associate at a V10 doing Corporate work. I just received a secondment opportunity with a firm client. It would mainly be helping out on their year-end disclosure and annual meeting process for the next 3-4 months.

I'm pretty satisfied with my big law experience. Obviously the hours can be rough, but I've been working with good ppl and getting good exp. My reviews have been solid and I've had no real issues during my 1+ year at my current firm.

Would you accept this secondment?

I am just so sad. I joined a major consulting company in January under its “lesser” affiliate and part of the deal is that there is no “bench” if you’re not staffed then you’re out of a job immediately. My project lead was an MD and all year she stringed me along that she was going to bring me over to the parent company and now there’s a hiring freeze and even though I’ve had nothing but good feedback on my project by the end of the year I’ll be out of a job. A stub year here. Partners and counsels in my group are super respectful. When they revise my work real-time, they'd often ask me "what do you think?" After they make the change, that is. I know they do this out of courtesy, but I feel dumbfounded sometimes- it kinda feels pretentious af for me to even say that's great or yes, I agree.
