I’ve done all of the above.
PM in house is widely varied. I am more a program manager with a focus on resources, product launches, leadership/exec presos and strategy. My friends at other in house are much more project managers focusing on budgets, timelines/project plans, and execution (though their title might be either project or program manager).
I moved from Account to PM. If you’re not solid on PM foundations I would switch within agency, get a strong grasp on those, your strengths, weaknesses, and what you enjoy. Then apply for in house from there.
I think there are overlaps but we have two distinct roles. As PM I am internally focused on my programs success, delivering on time, team drive, staying on budget.
As AM you’re in tune with the clients strategy and business needs, selling in more work. Budget and timelines are part of it but more in regards to clear client comms and expectations, and making sure they’re happy.
I was an AAE and moved into PM within my agency to test if I liked it in an environment I was familiar with. There’s differently overlap and in some of my accounts, I play a duo account/pm role. I would have a introductory interest convo with the head of your pm department and pick their brain!
