I’m an HR Generalist. My job is a mix of recruitment and Employee Relations. I find the recruitment aspect to be pretty enjoyable and stress free, but the Employee Relations aspect does often give me a lot of anxiety (I’m a very anxious person to begin with). Recently, it’s been worse because I have several ER cases currently that seem like they could be potentially turning into lawsuits. Do others in ER experience these anxieties? If so, how do you manage them?
Yes all the time, it’s extremely stressful managing risk and the emotions of all parties involved in ER issues. I try to document as much as possible. And consult with talent colleagues and general counsel, just helpful to have confidential sounding boards. Also self care, I tend to internalize a lot (am I doing the right things? did I say too much? Not enough? Is this taking too long? Did I miss anything?) and I’ve had to really set mental boundaries.
Just make sure you're covered under your employer's liability insurance... You can be named as an individual in lawsuits. CYA by checking with legal and document everything.
