I’m an industry hire and my review after my first engagement was bad. Not because I was lazy or not willing to learn, but more about lack of consulting skills - lead meetings, make perfect slides, know how to deal with tough client situations etc. Now I can’t sleep but thinking about what I’m going to do to turn that around.

Hi, I’m a Principal at BCG and I SUCKED at this job in my first year post MBA as an industry hire. Keep focused, don’t let your anxiety take over and improve, you can make it!

Not ideal situation but you have time to improve

I would break down the areas to improve and start focusing on how to quickly close the gaps on each one (like prioritizing quick wins/fixes).

In addition, work with your coach/relationship manager to work on action plans

Key to consulting is arrogance. Always act you are the smartest man in the room even when you are clueless. Clients are paying you because they already think you are a genius.

As for slides not looking pretty enough: Just say in my old industry we only cared about the facts.

You can send my $34,567.21 consulting fee through PayPal. Thanks!

On making perfect slides, I would suggest that you majorly ZD everything, and otherwise just look for inspiration from other people. When your supervisor sends out your slides you made, check them and see the tweaks they made, and then going forwards make those same tweaks before you send them to the supervisor. I don’t mind fixing my teams slides when it’s stylistically different and would never give a bad review for that, but silly things like spelling errors / numbers not adding up, etc get really annoying quickly and I don’t expect to have to keep repeating feedback and not having them do it right first time after hearing it 3x already.

Also, would suggest engaging a promote through consultant on tips. They will likely have slides on NUTSAC, example formats, checklists etc that they have used themselves / shared with their ACs. Good luck! 🤞

It’s an acronym to remember to check the important pieces of a slide with charts so that it’s all updated and accurate
N = notes
U = units
T = tag / title
S = source
A = axis
C = consistency

I did it three years ago after five years in industry, and it was a wild ride. If at all possible, get onto engagements in your old industry or where you’ll get to use your existing skill set. Also use good juniors where you can, if you can outsource excel and powerpoint to someone faster and cheaper, then you then you look like an effective manager. You were hired for your skill set and your experience, you’ve got to work out how to showcase those while getting up to speed on the core consulting stuff.

like

I went through this for two years, I was industry hire with 10yrs non consulting experience not sure of your level but you basically need to learn to be a great Analyst and Consultant within your first year while competing with your peers, it is a very stressful time but like other comment, chunk it up and tackle the learning. Slides improve as there are tons of examples of good, other things like facilitating meetings and tough clients require time to develop your style and some true mentoring / coaching....you need someone to help you say “maybe think about doing it this way”....

I would assume the seniors at Bain making the hiring decision knew what they were doing. Expectations management is a key skill for you to learn asap. Be honest with your peers/manager about what you can or can’t do, they may be less familiar with experienced hires. Sounds like your own expectations have quickly reset, this is often the biggest challenge.

I'm in the same boat. For me, it was more about ways of working--much less independence, much more communication needed, much faster pace, much more focus required in this job. I'm anxious about the upcoming review cycle--I started with just enough time to get caught in it. What's helped me is getting on a new case and working on these skills with a new manager. Still struggling with the anxiety and uncertainty, but at least I can do something about it now.

I joined EPAM systems two weeks back and I see 25+ folks on the bench for Devops and cloud. I’m really worried if I’ll get a client project. Spoke to couple of folks within the DevOps pool, they mentioned that the client interview is tough to crack. I’m planning to look for opportunities outside of EPAM.

Hi ad finance (&MD/VPCS) friends! As we put 2022 budget to bed(ish)… Curious to the $ percentages divvied by practice that you dole out… ie. For every dollar sold, how much goes to immediate % margin giveback, and how much are you allowed to/have to mandate to strategy, client service, creative, ops, etc… Curious to see if it’s different between mass/shopper/CRM/digital etc. No one is ever going to get what they want… but should/can give what they need?? Don’t post your company! 😊

At a mandatory full office meeting, in front of everyone, the office manager announced that I was eligible for a Senior Role, without telling me before hand. I have to apply to the role. So, if I don’t apply, it’s my ass right? Also, should I run for the hills, is this my sign? The position pays a little more in commission, but it comes with no boost in base and it’s sort of an managerial internship, where they show me the ropes. The problem is I don’t ever want to be in management.
