I’m an industry senior, manager is retiring in 2 months & new tax director is joining this week. Have been at company for 15 months. Considering talking to HR & new director for a plan to grow my career at this company; company is growing & likely we will need 2 more ppl at associate/senior levels (we have 1 associate). What is a realistic time frame to set for promotion to manager & what goals should I be setting? Company is tiered partnership, acquiring new businesses & operates multi-state.
Absolutely have that conversation when the new director starts. Sounds like you’ll have seniority in the department. If you can convince them that you have the requisite knowledge, skillset and drive I can see how a path could be laid out for promotion. However, if the manager was running the department, sounds like they had way more experience overall? How much more? If you’re like 5 years away from having the experience your company typically requires for the title you may have some issues there. Something to think about.

Was the manager that is retiring, running the tax department until now? Or was there a director who left? The reason I ask because if the manager was running the show thus far and you were his/her right hand, then the case could be that you are ready to be the right hand of the director as well. The hiring and supervision of the new staffs would make a strong case as well.
Correct. The manager retiring was running the dept. She hired a tax director as her role is more complex now. I am/was her right hand for the lower tier partnership returns, but don’t know much about the higher tier tax return.
Manager had more experience, but the business has grown & needs 5 or 6 in the tax department at various levels, currently only 3. So I feel I could be ready for manager level anywhere between 6-18 months, as I could manage the lower tier tax returns.
