I’m annoyed that a white woman was selected as the leader of the newly created Black Action Council. I have no doubt that her credentials qualify her, but in an age when firms are saying they can’t get their diversity numbers up, they feel a white woman is best suited to lead a Black Action Council?

Agree. I don’t know if she has been made the leader of the BAC though — I think this was just highlighting that she’s joined. Every other person on the slide was given a specific title (eg new national inclusion lead, civilian sector lead, etc). Given that BAC is pretty mixed this seems like a normal announcement

Technically no. That leader is now leading national D&I. Amy’s been heading up GPS Consulting D&I.

You obviously don’t know who the leaders are in the firm! She is the current GPS D&I leader. So why wouldn’t she be involved with the efforts to improve the black experience. Also, this would be a teaching moment for you to not just look at a white face, and understand the she also embodies diversity and inclusion as a handicapped PPMD who actually gets it. If you are that concerned about the face, get Involved!

Given to how shaken up she looked in some of the diversity convos, I don’t think she is the right person for the job. A black leader should be in that position.

A white woman may not be the absolute best suited for understanding the plight of the target population, but maybe other execs are more likely to listen to her, which is important. Having yet another woman of color in a diversity officer role get ignored, sidelined and/or forced out is not ideal.

Unpopular opinion here: Id rather have a white person who is willing to do the work it takes to have D & I at the firm than a black persons who is not passionate about it in the role. So far, that woman has been very proactive about being a blm advocate at the firm. Not all skin folk have our best interest at heart. She also works with a lot of minorities in her D & I program

This. I realized a long time ago, you gotta have a white person to help you fight that battle. If we have white people who want to stick their heads out to help us further the cause, I welcome it Also we don't know this woman's private life. She could be married to a black guy and birthed interracial children. There are whites on the diversity panel in interracial relationships. So they know our battles and struggles.

I’m wondering if they are giving “us” a break from advocating and carrying the torch, and making others step up which I want to see. Organizations are doomed if they pick a Black person and doomed if they don’t.

This was an internal and appointed process, the only thing we had control over was “opting in to receive communication” about it. I’m junior level so I have no insight on communications sent to leadership during the selection process.

Better question to ask : did Deloitte engage any Black people and offer them the position? After all, that’s what companies do with other positions.

Correction: a black man and minority woman (won’t assume to know identifies as black) are the cochairs of the council as pointed out by D5, but this was not shown on the slide so I was unaware. I don’t know why Amy was highlighted in the leadership transitions of the call and posted there but I wanted to update this since I can’t delete it now knowing. I still stand by being annoyed if she was the leader/face of the council. I know and welcome the need for non-black allies in D&I spaces so my annoyance was not with that (as assumed by a few).

Exactly point I tried making above but likely failed at it.
