Reach out and say you saw the opening and you’re interested in applying. You were hoping they could provide more insight on the company and their experience there.
Agree with A1! This is what I did when I was searching for a job last year. It’s not nearly as awkward as you think, and everyone I reached out to was super responsive and helpful! Good luck!
I’d just be open and up front about it. Something like:
“Hey, long time no talk, hope you’re doing well. I saw there’s an opening at your company I’m interested in, would love to pick your brain about your experience at the company and how you’re liking it, if you’d be willing to chat and have some time over the next week or so”
I hate the insincerity of like pretending you just want to catch up as friends and then dropping that you want job intel. But if an acquaintance approached me as a professional and just asked for info on my company experience I’d be happy to spend 20 minutes. And depending how well you present yourself probably would be happy to pass your resume along as well.
Keep in mind it’s year end and the holidays though.
Ditto. It’s happened to me a few times by people that I casually knew or knew of in law school who graduated after me. It’s never been a problem and they didn’t have to pretend like it hasn’t been years since we’ve talked. I never mind answering these types of questions from people who reach out via LinkedIn or email.

I second A1. You can also include that you’d be interested in catching up with them and learning about the company even if they don’t have knowledge about the specific role.
