I’m at a mid-size litigation firm (mostly med mal defense) and really like it, but the pay is a bit low. Huge quality of life benefit though, 7 min from home and lots of flexibility (wife and I have a toddler). A co-defendant firm called and offered me a position at significantly more pay (like double), but the commute would be 1 hour. What would you do?

Have you asked about being able to do hybrid? If I could wfh three days out of the week (depending on if you have the space at home to have an office where you’d actually be able to get work done) that switch would be worth it. A lot you can save and plan for the baby with the extra income. But also, how far are you from partnership consideration? If that’s only a few years away I’d hang in there if becoming partner was a possibility

like

I’d say 2 years away. I like where I’m at so maybe I’ll wait and have the extra time with my family.

I’d explain having a young child and see if you can negotiate a couple days a week at home. Unless you’re struggling to make ends meet I would pass. If you’re good enough for them to try to poach you, other offers will
come along, this won’t be the only one.

We’re doing fine financially, but we’re not well off by any means. My wife works too. I like the hybrid idea.

An hour commute isn’t bad. It’s basically one podcast one way and tactically scheduled work calls the other. If you don’t mind driving and enjoy podcasts I don’t think the commute is an issue.

That’s the thing. He goes to bed at 7:00 so even if I left at 5:00 sharp every day, that’s one hour or less a day.

Have you considered talking to your current employer about your comp? That is a pretty big disparity.

Need advice! I’m currently interviewing for an account executive role and there’s a couple of red flags that have come up. 1. They aren’t able to tell me when I would have to relocate for the remote role I applied for. 2. Midway through the interviews—-the team decided to bump me down to a level lower which changes the base salary and commission. The recruiter is also unable to disclose why the team made that decision which makes me uncomfortable. What would you recommend?
