I’m attending a “holiday reception” hosted by a bunch of different firms for all of the attorneys in a certain practice area. It’s at a restaurant in the evening, but there is no dress code listed anywhere and I have no idea what to wear. Is a simple cocktail dress OK? Should I wear normal work attire? I’m a new attorney so I have no context for these things. My firm is not hosting, so I don’t have anyone I could ask about it.

For after work events I always wear my work clothes. I’ll choose a nicer/cuter outfit that day but I don’t change in between.

Ditto. I’ll add a jacket that day

I recently came to know few things about IBM which i didn't know before joining -
Officially 22 vacation leaves are there but can't take more than 15, if you take it your utilisation goes down for that year, and automatically performance will be impacted.

Sick leaves/ casual/compensating leaves all kind of leaves are going to impact utilisation, and then performance.

Only 12 leaves can be carry forwarded to next year, so at the end of year remaining leave balance will be lapsed.

Hello Everybody.
I really need leave for two weeks. My project does not have long leave policy but it has strict target policy. The last best leave I took was for 4 days only. I really need a long leave so I can have a vacation atleast once. it's been 3 years I worked in my current project. Never taken a long leave. Plz suggest me good ideas. I'm not sick but getting depressed day by day.

People in Canada, which travel credit card do you prefer for flights, hotels bookings and would you use the same for international transactions while on vacation?

SWE with almost 2.5 YOE. I was laid off from my previous job at the end of July and accepted a new position for 115K, no performance or sign on bonus. Is this a good salary for a full stack SWE with my experience or should I have asked for more? They offered 110 and I negotiated to 115, I also have unlimited PTO.

How many days of PTO do you take? I’m a second year partner and have struggled to step away for more than a couple of days at a time. I take around 15 days total for the year. This is a mentality carried over from being a senior manager and working constantly to sell and build a ledger to make partner. My team has doubled in size and ledger continues to grow. I fear burnout with pressure to keep pace of growth no additional incentive to work this hard because of equal sharing comp model.

Senior attorneys at v100, how common is it for attorneys who start at small firms to lateral to biglaw? Have you worked with any? Conventional wisdom is always that if you don’t start there it’s hard to “trade up”. My coworker and I just did it to two different great v30 firms, and I’m wondering if it’s really that uncommon? Just out of curiosity. We’re not special counsel with special niche skills or anything, just associates. Pitfalls to beware? Positives?

I have noticed how transactional lawyers seem to have great respect for other lawyers in the field. They always talk about people in other firms as one or more of excellent, hard working, up and coming, very good with X, solution oriented, reasonable, etc.

Litigators, on the other hand, tend to talk about other lawyers in their field as sly, "a fox", aggressive, rude, difficult to deal with, overly adversarial, unethical, with "zealous" often being the most honorific term used.

I wonder why…
