Client side roles typically have lower sounding titles than agencies. Agency titles are super inflated. If the years of experience, role responsibilities, and pay are in line with what you want then that’s a better way to measure vs title.
Only in the US is there title inflation sorry. How can someone be a VP and Media Director in the same title
I don't think agency side is super inflated. Not always, anyway.... Have you seen titles in banks?? Everyone is a VP.
Titles don't mean much anywhere, the longer I stay in the corporate world. It is the job and the pay that determines the worth of your role.
I had no idea, AD. Lol! See what I mean!
Yeah, just forget the title. If the role and the responsibilities sound interesting AND the money works out. Why not?
Thanks for the perspective all - everything I read was aligned with my thinking just glad to hear I wasn't overlooking anything. Stay safe!
Good luck OP!
Not really. The money can be better and the work is definitely different. Imo, ignore the title. I would gladly take a manager or senior associate role that pays the same rate as my title. Especially so if you've been promoted internally to your current title, the money can be on-par or even better.
If the money works out and the work makes you LEARN something vs calling the shots (indicating you know everything there is to know), i think it is worth it.
Are you a general media VP or tied to a specific channel? Id look at what you're trying to accomplish in the next few years and identify if the role will lend itself to you achieving it.
Yeah general media VP - have experience mostly in strategy and account management. Dangerous with all traditional and digital channels but never focused on one area. I've always gravitated to broader media planning and the impact on clients business. As a result client side seemed like a natural progression.
I’m client side having moved from agency - Group Director. Titles are definitely inflated in agencies, vs. clients. I came into my role with 15yrs+ experience, you’d be lucky to find a Director in an agency with 8-10yrs. Don’t worry about the title as others have said. Make sure you’re getting what you want from the role you are applying for, that the company values are aligned to yours (it’s what keeps you motivated) and ideally you’ll have a better work life balance. Good luck!!
