Did the same and it hasn’t been that easy to be honest. The culture of consulting is takes time to get used to:
-they’ll read up on a topic (eg AI/ML) for a week and will position themselves as a guru in front of their peers and their clients. In industry, being a SME is earned.
-be ready to bullshit a lot to your client, you have to show them you’re smarter than them. Consulting has a lot to do with your personality as well.
-folks that are rewarded are those that network a lot and sucking up to the higher ups goes a long way. In industry, some of this helps too in advancing your career but it’s way more evident in consulting.
Can you explain what you meant by consulting has a lot to do with personality? What types of personality is a good fit for consulting?
Also, how is networking helpful in consulting? Is it find new clients vs find new engagement?
How is your performance measured against your peers? Is it the person that works the hardest or the person that BS the most but gets away because of their ability to connect with the supervisors/partners a lot?
I have a lot of questions in my head .. and obviously I am a bit concerned that I may not be able to wing ambiguous situations as much as the consultants in many events are able to do.
In consulting you have to network to get projects, work, and things you’re interested in and it helps you advance your career. It’s mostly making friends with those you’ve worked with before.
You’re judged against your peer in regards to performance and you get reviews and ratings based off that. From what I’ve experienced the better rated people are the people that are liked the most not always the ones who are better performers.
Just remember we’re all faking it. And everyone’s just as uncomfortable/confused/ concerned as you are they’re just better at hiding it with years of practice
