I’m considering moving from Betheda to DC but am worried about rats. Any areas to avoid in DC in terms of potential rat problems?

Lmao I know there’s a lot of social media posts about it but the rat thing is not that bad! However, I’d avoid foggy bottom over by GW. That’s where I’ve seen them the most

Thanks, that’s helpful

Being a few blocks away from metro stations and restaurants goes a long way. But you’ll still have some fuzzy friends scattering around outside during the summer. Rats inside should be very avoidable, just avoid older and or grimier buildings

Honestly roaches are a bigger problem and they’re pretty much everywhere

If I find a higher floor apartment at newer building, will that minimize risk?

like

Same! Just don’t live on the ground floor haha

Rats own this city, the rest of us are merely visiting. But agree with others that if you find them inside then something has gone horribly wrong.

Dupont is probably the worst.

likefunnyhelpful

Just don’t live near any politicians!

I’d consider Arlington or Alexandria over DC

I’ve only ever seen a rat once that I can recall in Arlington. I see them all the time in DC, especially in Georgetown.

Maybe stay in Bethesda

funny

You’ll be fine. 750k people live in dc.

like

Yeah but what's the rat: people ratio?

funnylike

This is a first 😂 but in honesty, DuPont, Foggy and much of the more urban NW of the district tend to have more rats from my anecdote. If you’re in an apartment building and not on the bottom floor you’ll be fine. I’ve never heard of rats being an issue for anyone above the 1st floor.

likehelpful

You won’t have rats in your place if you stick to a newer apartment.

I’ve lived in different parts of the city for 6+ years and have never had an issue with rodents inside my apt. I park in underground garages and have also never seen one there. On the streets… yeah I see them anywhere. Avoid basement apts and I’m sure you’ll be fine.

So don’t move to DC, problem solved

like

I’m single and while Bethesda is nice, it’s an older demographic but maybe that’s the best option

like

Like in your house? Just love in new construction. If you mean seeing them on the street, then yeah… DC’s pretty much off limits for you. Outdoor dining has definitely contributed to the rat population.

like

I lived in dc a long time and don’t think I ever met someone with rat problems in their place, and I lived in an old row house for a long time

You do of course see them all the time outside at night

helpful

You can get a feral cat from the city or get an outdoor cat. This worked for us

Same, neighbor and I take turns putting food and water out for one. It hangs around on our patio furniture or under the patio. Def helps keep the critters away. No idea where it goes during the winter, but sure enough comes back every spring (well for the last few years)

like

Navy Yard, don’t live on the ground floor. Ample higher end buildings there with zero rat issues.

Matter of luck elsewhere in the city. Foggy, DuPont and so many areas have generations of infestation at this point. Higher end buildings are unlikely to have them regardless except around ground floor dumpsters as they can afford to fight (and largely win) the never ending war. I lived in and around DC for years and never once so much as saw a rat in any of my buildings (aside from dumpsters or sidewalks).

If you want a better value, Crystal City, also basically rat-free.

helpful

Avoid DC then….

Rats are mostly an easy fix if you’re motivated to fix it
