Just recieved a offer from Western Alliance Bank for a Senior Business Analyst role. Comp 100k but the role would be in office. I currently work remote, have unlimited PTO,and a really healthy work life balance but am being underpaid tremendously. The new role seems like it does not have healthy work life balance and many red flags have already come up. I want to grow my skills and wouldn't mind being in office as I do miss being around people. How do I vet the role before accepting?
level area manager position at Amazon. I’m working on multiple stories related to the leadership principles. Can anyone provide me some tips regarding the role?
There are 16 leadership principle and I’m thinking of creating some stories around each but the thing that concerns me is what if the questions they ask are related to the same principle and I might have already used up my stories. Something like that. Can anyone please help? Amazon Amazon

American who moved elsewhere in Australia, but here are some things to keep in mind for negotiation.
Moving stuff over here is really expensive right now. I think I spent ~US$3,000 for 5 boxes (it was just me and no furniture). I would reach out to moving companies like Seven Seas and get some quotes. Also read over Australia’s biosecurity laws since there are a lot of things you can’t bring (e.g. wood) and it make bringing furniture over quite hard.
In addition to Sydney being VHCOL (on par with SF/NYC), it’s a really tough rental market in Sydney, with like ~1% vacancy (health vacancy is 3%+). I would look at how much a 3 bedroom rental would cost right now in your preferred neighborhoods, and try to negotiate for that (with some buffer) to be less than 30% of your salary. Rents here are advertised by week, so it’s weekly rent * 52 weeks / 12 months to get the monthly cost. You’ll probably want to find a furnished rental to save on moving costs, although that might be a needle in a haystack. Also, you are expected to provide your own appliances (aka refrigerator and washing machine). I would also ask them to cover the cost of a rental advocate (aka a real estate agent for renters) to help you secure a place.
Childcare here is mainly daycare. I don’t know of anyone who has a nanny, and even babysitters for a night out are quite taboo (they rely on the grandparents). The terms I’ve heard are “creiche” and “kinder”, but I’m not sure what age they translate to (we don’t have kids). They get sick all the time, so make sure you have private health coverage and savings since you don’t qualify for Medicare on a temporary visa. You’ll also be paying more to pick them up around 6 pm; around 3 pm is the standard ending time. You’ll probably want to sort out childcare once you know where you are living, but space is limited and there’s likely to be more demand and slots when new childcare subsides rules (for Australian citizens and permanent residents) start in July.
A final cost to keep in mind is plane tickets back to the US. Airfare has been averaging A$2-3k per ticket, and doubling (or more) during the school holidays (Christmas time - January, Easter, end of June, and September). So I would factor in ~A$10-20k per year into your ask.
Looking at $150-200 / day. Finding daycare is hard as most are oversubscribed. We are on a list prior to birth for one that has ~9month wait list at $185/day
On your own for housing? That's a raw deal for an expat. Will you get a separate allowance for it given the temporary nature of assignment?
My company has never done this before. I’m going to get more involved and shape the offer. It’s got to be compelling enough to go.
Be very careful about Fringe Benefit Tax. A lot of the things you’ll be looking for as part of your package will incur FBT, which essentially doubles (yes, doubles, I’m not exaggerating) the total cost.
You will need to take this into consideration when asking for your moving allowance. A $30k moving allowance can easily become $20k in effect, after accounting for FBT. I strongly suggest you consult with a tax expert that focuses on migration to Australia.
Yes, it is. But it can often come out of your moving allowance, which is why I’ve advised OP to take it into considering when asking for his allowance.
Did this last year, and my firm offered my reimbursement upto $10k AUD. Wasn't sufficient obviously but definitely softened the blow to my bank account. We air-shipped boxes due to COVID not being too helpful with sea-shipping but I'd strongly recommend via sea if the delivery times are nearly back to normal. Make sure you do your research about shipping companies(pro-tip: dont go directly with the top tier ones, they'll be horribly expensive).
Prepare for an initial struggle with finding rental accommodation, especially without rental history and the current messed up rental market..
Sorry to sound discouraging, but please feel free to DM if any questions.
All the very best! Cheers
We have to get through the visa conversation first but will definitely reach out. Thank you
