I just had an initial phone screen for a new Senior HR Generalist role, and the salary is $10k less than the low number I offered when he asked for my salary expectations. I’m at $85 with my current role, so I asked for $90-$95 for this role. However he told me the salary is $80. I’m really unhappy in my current job so I’m wondering how I can either negotiate for more salary (he said there may be wiggle room) or, explain that the $80 number he offered may be okay, depending on other benefits?

Ok, after an HR screening (and salary requirements) I had 3 interviews. Then HR calls for references and to be “reminded” of salary requirements. All 3 references now contacted. Will I get an offer?

I’m an HR Professional and don't have compensation background so was curious how other companies move an individual contributor into a management role and if there are negative compensation impacts. For example, with my company's current compensation structure, a Principal Engineer would move into a Director role in management as it would keep bonus target % the same. With this structure, employees who've never managed people before are put in higher level management positions in order to maintain their current bonus target %. If I put the Principal Engineer into lower management level that is more aligned to their job, then the employee would get less bonus target %. I am having a tough sale to entice the employee to take the management role if it results in less money for them. Therefore, at the company, we have a lot of Sr Managers and Directors who barely know how to manage people. Is this practice/structure common with other companies?

Just had a “tech screen” with a startup where the interviewer was rude and condescending. Kept berating me when I made a minor mistake and talked over me when I’d try to explain my thought process.

Note to interviewers, do better. It’s a candidate’s market and you’ll have a hard time attracting talent with a toxic culture.
