I mean, as someone approaching 40 and child free by choice? This is a major benefit that will never apply to me, that others get to take every couple years should they so choose. Plus all the other child care benefits that are provided. It would be nice to see new benefits that weren’t related to the breeders.
KPMG - That's a false equivalency because we don't choose for our family members to die, while we have established that for first world professionals, having a child absolutely is. There is no valid analysis to do there.
You know this reminded of SATC. The episode where Carrie is invited to her friend’s baby shower. And , when she thinks of how she would never get any of those gifts from her friends if she decides never to have a child. Like should there be a day for people like her to celebrate and get gifts too without having to have a child.
Nostalgic!!

Haha so true. Actually 3 of us (married with kids) were planning a girls weekend for our single friend’s 40th birthday. One of the women said something about how we should do something extra nice and get an expensive gift because this friend had gotten all of us wedding and baby gifts. I thought that was a thoughtful point! (Though I don’t feel strongly about the parental leave point - yes I took maternity leave but it wasn’t exactly all about me! - so if non-parents get leave without the baby, I want that too!! Ha).
An investment in parental leave is an investment in the future. If people can't have parental leave we won't have anyone to work in public accounting. Birth rates are decreasing because people cant afford financially, mentally and physically to have kids. Parental leave helps with that.
Curious if someone can pay me if I choose not to work.
Only the government.
This is so dystopian
By parental leave, you mean paid? I’ve never had paid maternity leave, so I guess I’m behind the times about what’s normal in 2022. Are you literally asking for the company to pay you for 3 months to not be there? Or asking where you can have unpaid 3 months off. Most firms would likely entertain the latter. But if you’re asking for a 3 month paid vacation I’m at a loss for words on that one.
Paid maternity leave is not a “common” thing, it’s only offered at some companies. I went back to work after only 2 weeks after my first child because I got nothing and couldn’t afford to take more time unpaid. For my second and third children I got 6 weeks of short term disability that was actually only paid weeks 2-6 and only at 50% of my salary.
Per that logic, if firms offer a volunteer day, people that don't want to volunteer can stay home and watch TV 🤪

Think it is called leave of absence

I think to be logical, you simply could’ve removed the comparison to parental leave. A company would never offer a paid sabbatical, but offer it only to those people who hadn’t used short term disability and parental leave to heal and/or care for a newborn baby. I do, however, know there are companies who offer paid sabbaticals to all employees (or employees of a certain level).
We’re doing our part to grow the recruiting pipeline down the road, they should pay us more than child-free-by-choice folks jkjk
A sabbatical for a childless person to ponder life and travel is hardly a comparison to someone taking medically necessary leave because they gave birth or assisted someone who did. Just going to work is less stressful and exhausting than caring for a newborn and several other toddlers at home. Additionally women are typically eligible for STD given it is a major medical event, and aren't cleared medically for normal work for 6-12 weeks depending on how things went - the insurance companies wouldn't pay out if it weren't medically supportable.
If you want an equivalent available to you, it is a certain amount of paid medical leave for either yourself or to care for someone in your immediate family. I don't think too many are opposed to that.
I'm curious, do you think before you speak/post?
A lot of non parents don’t realize that many of us actually have to use our PTO as well, especially if we want to get paid our full salary. I maxed mine out during my leave.
I think he makes some valid points. The thing is our society values parents and having children so these benefits would be in place. So no I think you won’t get any special benefits for not having children, unless our Society started valuing that. Maybe it will someday with overpopulation becoming an issue. However there was some note about disability benefits, I don’t think many companies give any benefits, in fact I think most companies actually discriminate against people with disabilities whether intentionally or unintentionally.
Somehow your reply is worst than the original post.

Employers offer benefits to attract and retain talent. They do NOT do it to be kind or fair. The majority of people have kids so paternity leave is a highly sought after benefit.
This thread is hilarious. FR, work conditions shouldn't be as such that people who are childless feel that they are missing out on the opportunity to take a break from work (not vacation, just not melting your brain in front of a computer). Drop the charge hour goal Deloitte. I left because everyone got pissy when I asked if you considered dropping charge hours a hair when people started burning out. Instead I got a calendar invite to a training for stress management and for a shitty excuse of a "competitive, market-based comp adjustment".
Okay what I have to say is going to cause an uproar but it needs to be said. It seems like the moms are the only people getting nasty in this thread.. Sounds about right though. The employees that decide to have babies are getting extra months off that childless employees don’t get. And to top it off, the childless employees will sometimes get stuck having to pick up the extra slack that is coming from those employees being out on maternity leave, and it doesn’t end there bc after their maternity leave is up, then they’re also leaving early or calling out sick whenever their kids are sick or have dr appts or school functions, etc.. I think there should be some added benefits for childless employees since they’re the ones that pick up the slack. And no, the extra time for childless employees should not be offered to the employees that already took their maternity leave to have a baby. I’d rather use my time off going on a extended vacation to Fiji. It’s a choice. Some choose to have babies bc that’s what they think is right for them and they believe that is the way of life, and others choose to live their life doing all the things they enjoy because they made a choice to not be tied down with children. There is no need to get angry about people making choices that are not the same as yours. Or for thinking that we should get some added benefits as well, even though we’re choosing not to have babies. Have a great day everyone, babies or no babies!
Hmm?
To the Deloitte person that started this, Really, this is your question? As we say in the south, bless your heart!! Good thing you don’t work for PwC
Why would they?
